AMERICAN LEAGUE

Twins vs. Indians
Minnesota: RHP Brad Radke said he hopes to sign a four-year contract extension worth $36 million when the Twins return home this week from a 13-game trip. "Nothing new, except to say we're still close and both sides want to get it done," Radke said. ... Denny Hocking has made just two errors while playing six positions (2B, SS, 3B and all three outfield spots). ... LHP Eddie Guardado is 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA in his last 28 appearances. Only nine of 31 runners on base when Guardado has come into a game have scored this season. Cleveland: The Indians have talked to Detroit about free-agent-to-be OF Juan Gonzalez, who has reportedly told friends he would love to play in Cleveland. ... OF Kenny Lofton, still not 100 percent after off-season shoulder surgery, said he does not want to rest. "We win together and I want to help us start winning again," Lofton said. ... OF Manny Ramirez, sidelined since May 30 with a strained left hamstring, is expected to begin another rehabilitation stint this week in the minors. Ramirez homered in his first game of a rehab assignment June 17 at Double-A Akron, but reaggravated the injury later in the game. ... RHP Jaime Navarro, outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on June 28, has pitched 4 2-3 scoreless innings in two relief outings. The veteran starter is trying to make the conversion to a reliever.

Yankees vs. Devil Rays
New York: CF Bernie Williams hit .472 on a season-long, 13-game road trip, going 26-for-55. His 13-game hitting streak is one shy of his season high. ... SS Derek Jeter (0-for-4) went hitless Sunday for just the fifth time in 32 games since coming off the DL May 27. ... RHP Orlando Hernandez reported no problems after pitching Saturday for the first time since June 18. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out three in 5 2/3 innings to get his seventh victory. He ordinarily would be scheduled to pitch again on Thursday, but manager Joe Torre is considering holding him back until Friday for the start of a series with the Mets. ... 2B Chuck Knoblauch, who missed the past two games with a left ear infection, took batting practice and could return to the lineup Tuesday. ... RHP Jason Grimsley, who also has a left ear infection, could make his next start on Thursday or Saturday. Tampa Bay: 3B Vinny Castilla (back strain) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham on Saturday. He may be activated from the DL as early as Monday. ... LF Greg Vaughn, sidelined since June 15 with a right hamstring strain, is improving and may return Tuesday. ... Bubba Trammell's eighth-inning fly ball was played into a triple by Yankees LF Shane Spencer. It was his second career triple in 746 at-bats. The other came on Aug. 21, 1998 at Kansas City. ... Three-day attendance for the series was 99,431, second-best at Tropicana Field in the last two seasons. The Devil Rays and Indians attracted 101,450 for three games last Aug. 6-8. ... RHP Rick White stranded one runner when he relieved Steve Trachsel in the sixth inning. He's allowed just three of 25 (.120) inherited runners to score, second in the AL to teammate Jim Mecir's 1 of 14 (.071).

Blue Jays vs. Orioles
Toronto: With Raul Mondesi's 20th homer, Toronto now has three players with 20 or more homers by the All-Star break for the first time. (Mondesi-20, Carlos Delgado-27, Tony Batista-22). ... The Blue Jays have scored first in 14 of their last 18 road games. ... Kelvim Escobar did not allow a run in the first inning Sunday for the second consecutive start. He's allowed 20 runs in the first inning of his last 12 starts. ... Toronto has 137 home runs after 82 games. That projects to 271 over the course of the season. The team record is 221 in 1998 and the league record is 264 by Seattle in 1997. Baltimore: The Orioles clinched their first series win over the Blue Jays since 1998. Sunday's win gives Baltimore a one-game advantage in the all-time series (148-147). ... The last time Will Clark hit a homer in three consecutive scheduled games was in 1991. ... Mike Mussina has allowed two earned runs in his last 14 innings pitched with two no-decisions. He has allowed two runs or less in eight of his last nine starts (2.93 ERA).

Tigers vs. Royals
Kansas City: The Royals have given up at least one home run in 64 of 79 games. ... Mike Sweeney and Ricky Bottalico were voted the Royals' pitcher and player of the month for June. Detroit: Luis Polonia has led off a game with a home run 10 times in his career. ... The Tigers are off to a 3-0 start in their longest road trip of the year, a nine-game journey to Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee.

Red Sox vs. White Sox
Boston: OF Bernard Gilkey, who went 2-for-48 for Arizona before he was released, worked out with the Red Sox on Sunday. Manager Jimy Williams said he had no timetable regarding Gilkey's status, although a decision could be announced Monday. ... LHP Jeff Fassero, on the disabled list with weakness in his left shoulder, will throw on the side Monday in Minneapolis and, if all goes well, could be activated to start Wednesday. ... RHP Pedro Martinez, on the DL with a strained left oblique, was expected to rejoin the team in Minneapolis. Chicago: The White Sox played a man short Sunday following the demotion of rookie pitcher Kip Wells to Triple-A Charlotte. No one was called up to take Wells' spot on the roster and no starter has been named for Tuesday, which would've been Wells' spot. "He knows he's struggling," pitcher Cal Eldred said of Wells. "He also understands that by going to Charlotte, he'll be able to pitch in a little more relaxed atmosphere. He knows he can be successful here (in the big leagues)." Manager Jerry Manuel said he could use pitchers Sean Lowe or Kevin Beirne on Tuesday. The White Sox may call up an additional position player, who could come in handy for the next round of interleague games. ... INF Jose Valentin, who made his first ML start in right field Saturday, used his own infielder glove rather than borrow someone's outfield glove. ... The White Sox have drawn 11 crowds of at least 30,000 people at home and are 9-2 in those games.

Mariners vs. Rangers
Seattle: The Mariners started the night leading the majors in on-base percentage (.366) despite being last in the American League in hits with 711. The top four teams in the majors in on-base percentage were all from the AL West. Oakland (.362), Texas (.361) and Anaheim (.355) trailed the Mariners. ... Starter Freddie Garcia's return from a hairline fracture of his right tibia is continuing on schedule. Garcia has completed his injury-rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma, and last season's 17-game winner is close to being activated. Texas: Esteban Loaiza will probably remain in the rotation following speculation that he could be moved to the bullpen. Loaiza has enjoyed success in limited relief work (3-1 with a save for his career), but the extended injury absence of Darren Oliver from the rotation means Loaiza will continue as a starter after the All-Star break. ... The Rangers placed RHP Ryan Glynn on the 15-day disabled list due to blister problems on his right index finger. Left-hander Doug Davis was recalled from from Triple-A Oklahoma. Davis was 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA in 12 starts for Oklahoma, but was 1-1 with an 8.82 ERA in five appearances for Texas earlier in the season.

Marlins vs. Expos
Florida: Reid Cornelius retired the last 15 batters he faced in Florida's 2-1 win Sunday, giving the Marlins their first ever three-game sweep over the Expos. Cornelius, who is 3-1 in his last five starts, was Montreal's 13th-round pick in the June 1988 draft and made his major league debut with the Expos in 1995. ... Mark Smith had his first career two-homer game while making just his 12th start of the season, and fourth in right field. ... SS Alex Gonzalez missed his sixth straight start because of an injured middle right finger. Montreal: Jose Vidro was hitless in four at-bats, ending his career-best hitting streak at 14 games. He went 21-for-58 (.362) with five doubles, four homers and eight RBI over the course of the streak, which began June 16. ... RHP Julio Santana went five innings and had a career-high eight strikeouts, including seven of the first nine batters he faced, in his first start in six appearances for the Expos since he was signed as a free agent on June 18. ... The Expos fell to 38-39, one game below .500 for the first time since April 7, when a 10-5 loss to San Diego gave them a 2-3 record to open the season. ... Just 9,076 were on hand at Olympic Stadium as the Expos finished their first losing homestand of the season 4-8. ... RHP Scott Strickland was activated from the 60-day disabled list following the game. Injured closer Ugueth Urbina was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day DL and RHP Guillermo Mota was optioned to Triple-A Ottawa.

Pirates vs. Phillies
Pittsburgh: Reliever Scott Sauerbeck tossed a scoreless inning in his second and final rehab appearance at Triple-A Nashville. Sauerbeck, on the disabled list since June 15 with a left elbow strain, is expected to be activated on Monday. ... After a career-high 10-game hitting streak, 3B Luis Sojo is just 1-for-11. ... The Pirates will be on the road for 11 of their next 14 games. Philadelphia: Robert Person, disabled since June 19 with a strained right shoulder, threw on flat ground for 10 minutes before batting practice. Person (5-2, 3.17 ERA) is expected to be sidelined until after the All-Star break. ... Monday's starter Andy Ashby (2-6, 6.36 ERA) hasn't won since May 7. ... Closer Jeff Brantley has struck out at least one batter in each of his last 11 appearances.

Braves vs. Mets
Atlanta: Reliever John Rocker, who was unavailable the last two games after splitting open a callous on his left thumb Friday, warmed up in the ninth inning Sunday, but wasn't needed. "I could have pitched," he said. "I was ready to pitch but they didn't need me. I think in the long run they do need me." ... Braves 3B Chipper Jones missed the game with flu-like symptoms, and SS Rafael Furcal sat out with a strained right hamstring. ... Tom Glavine had been 0-4 with a 4.79 ERA in his last seven starts before posting his first win since May 21 against San Diego. New York: C Mike Piazza homered in the seventh inning and has driven in at least one run in 15 straight games -- two behind the major league record set by Ray Grimes of the Cubs in 1922. Piazza also has a 20-game hitting streak, second longest in the NL this season. ... OF Derek Bell's team record of scoring a run in 11 straight games was snapped. SS Melvin Mora, who had scored in 10 straight, also did not score. ... LHP Glendon Rusch allowed three hits in five at-bats to left-handers, raising their average to .389 against him. ... OF Jay Payton missed the game with a sore left wrist.

Cubs vs. Brewers
Chicago: Sammy Sosa, who hit a two-run double to cap the scoring in Friday's 7-4 victory in 15 innings, was 0-for-4 Saturday and 1-for-3 Sunday. ... Sunday's loss dropped the Cubs to a season-worst 16 games under .500 (32-48). ... The Cubs return home to face Pittsburgh on Monday night after completing their longest road trip -- 12 games in two weeks -- of the season. The Cubs were 3-9 on the trip, going 1-2 in Atlanta, 0-3 in Florida and 1-2 in both Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. Milwaukee: Although ineffective in his previous two appearances, closer Bob Wickman earned his 11th save in 13 opportunities Sunday in a 4-2 victory over the Cubs. With only one active player batting above .300 -- OF Geoff Jenkins at .308 -- Wickman is considered the team's best bet for the All-Star Game. ... After the first five meetings with the Cubs averaged more than 4 hours to complete, Saturday's 4-0 victory was played in 2:22 and Sunday's game ended in 2:38. ... The Brewers, who joined the NL in 1998, are 17-17 all-time against the Cubs.

Astros vs. Cardinals
Houston: The Astros have hit eight home runs the last two games after going four games without one. ... Mitch Meluskey led NL rookies with 41 RBI, 28 walks and 21 extra-base hits. ... The Astros are 3-18 in one-run games. ... Bill Spiers was 4-for-6 as a pinch hitter before grounding out in the ninth. ... Richard Hidalgo is 9-for-23 with three homers in six games since returning from a seven-game absence due to a sprained right knee. .... Scott Elarton lasted six innings in high humidity in St. Louis on Sunday after going eight innings each of his previous two starts. "I was done after six for sure," he said. St. Louis: 2B Fernando Vina is eligible to come off the disabled list from a hamstring injury on Tuesday and says he's ready to play. He is hitting .290 with three homers, 20 RBI and eight steals. ... Andy Benes makes his second straight start against the Reds Thursday in St. Louis. He's coming off a 12-3 victory in Cincinnati last Tuesday. ... The Cardinals' three-game series against the Reds starting Tuesday are standing room only, not that manager Tony La Russa was impressed. "What's wrong with the series we just played?" he said after 44,796 showed up for Sunday's game. "The fans have been excited all season long and it makes us excited." ... The Cardinals are shopping for a backup catcher now that Eli Marrero is on the disabled list with a sprained left thumb. They purchased the contract of Keith McDonald from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

Rockies vs. Padres
Colorado: Jeff Cirillo hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning of Sunday's game at San Diego, giving him at least one RBI in eight straight games, tying the club record set by Ellis Burks in 1996. ... Cirillo has 15 RBI in his last seven games. ... Mike Myers remarkable shutout streak ended when he allowed Ryan Klesko's homer leading off the eighth inning in Saturday night's 5-3 loss to the Padres. It was the first run allowed this season by Myers, whose streak had reached 18 1/3 innings over 33 appearances. San Diego: RHP Woody Williams was activated Sunday and made his first start since undergoing surgery May 4 to repair an aneurysm in his right armpit. To make room on the roster, OF-INF John Roskos was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. Roskos was recalled on Friday after Ed Sprague was traded to Boston, but did not appear in either of the last two games against Colorado. ... Roskos was picked to play in the Triple-A All-Star Game. He is hitting .360 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 52 games with Las Vegas.
