Minnesota: OF Matt Lawton, a career .264 hitter, entered
Saturday night's game 10th in the AL with a .340 average. "Before
the season, the manager (Tom Kelly) told me he wanted me to hit
third and I took it as a big responsibility," Lawton said. "I try
to work on my game every day and take a lot of batting practice."
... SS Cristian Guzman leads the majors with 12 triples, four off
the club record by Hall of Famer Rod Carew in 1977. ... LHP Jason
Miller, the Twins' fourth-round draft pick, signed. Minnesota has
signed 23 of its 52 picks. ... Twins CEO Chris Clouser attended the
game. Cleveland: OF Kenny Lofton and SS Omar Vizquel were dropped from
the top two spots in the lineup to the bottom, with 2B Roberto
Alomar moved from the third spot to leadoff. "We still have our
speed lined up," manager Charlie Manuel said. "I talked to both
of them about it and they were very receptive. It was time for a
change." Lofton, in an 0-for-19 slump, said: "This is something
that needed to be done. Hopefully it will take a little pressure
off myself and Omar and give our lineup a kick-start. As the top of
the lineup goes, we all go." ... Manuel said that RHP Charles
Nagy, who allowed one hit in six scoreless innings in a
rehabilitation start Friday night at Double-A Akron, will not be
activated until after the All-Star break.
Yankees vs. Devil Rays
New York: David Justice is 0-for-6 since joining the Yankees
after Thursday's trade with Cleveland. ... Derek Jeter, 1-for-5
Saturday after going hitless the night before, has hit safely in 27
of 31 games since coming off the disabled list for an abdominal
strain. ... Pitching plans are still not set for next Saturday's
day-night doubleheader against the New York Mets. ... Dwight Gooden
is scheduled to pitch in a Gulf Coast League game Monday. Tampa Bay: Switch-hitting CF Randy Winn is batting left-handed
this weekend for the first time since being recalled from Triple-A
Durham on May 28. He had been limited to batting right-handed since
spraining his left wrist in early May ... Reliever Rick White
entered the game with two on and no outs in the sixth and retired
three batters in a row. He has only allowed three of 24 inherited
runners to score this season.
Blue Jays vs. Orioles
Toronto: Raul Mondesi hit his 19th homer in the first inning
Saturday, a 388-foot shot to left at Camden Yards. It was his
second home run since being sidelined Sunday and Tuesday with a
strained left wrist. ... Chris Carpenter had allowed a first-inning
run in eight of 10 starts before a 1-2-3 first Saturday. Baltimore: 3B Ryan Minor was a late scratch Saturday after
pulling a muscle in his side during early batting practice. He was
replaced by Jeff Conine. ... Rookie Luis Matos started in CF for
Brady Anderson, who was 6-for-51 in his last 14 games. ... Sidney
Ponson gave up his 16th homer of the season, to Raul Mondesi, in
the first inning Saturday.
Tigers vs. Royals
Detroit: The Tigers have come to terms with their third- and
sixth-round draft picks, 3B Exavier Logan of Copiah-Lincoln Junior
College and RHP Matthew Parris, a 17-year-old high schooler from
California. Logan and Parris were expected to start their careers
with the Gulf Coast League Tigers. The Tigers have signed 30 of
their 43 picks. Kansas City: After breaking the team record for consecutive
errorless games by a shortstop, Rey Sanchez is aiming at the club
record for fewest errors by a shortstop in a season. Sanchez, who
has one error this year, will need to total fewer than nine to
overcome the record by Angel Salazar. ... Former OF Willie Wilson
and former manager Whitey Herzog were inducted into the Royals'
Hall of Fame in pregame ceremonies.
Red Sox vs. White Sox
Boston: The Red Sox, desperate for outfield help with Darren
Lewis joining Troy O'Leary and Trot Nixon on the DL, are going to
work out Bernard Gilkey, who was released by Arizona. Manager Jimy
Williams said Gilkey will work out Sunday and Monday before the Red
Sox decide whether to sign him. ... The Red Sox were busy Saturday,
recalling RHP Paxton Crawford from Triple-A Pawtucket and sending
LHP San Hoon-Lee to the same team. RHP Jason Sekany was designated
for assignment to open up a roster spot for newly acquired Ed
Sprague. ... Boston's team-record streak of giving up a homer was
stopped at 15 games Saturday. Chicago: RHP Kip Wells was sent back to the minors for a second
time. He'd lost four of his last five decisions and was 4-7 with a
6.03 ERA. "He doesn't have a lot of experience against good teams.
He just needs to get his confidence back," Chicago starter and
winner Mike Sirotka said Saturday of Wells. "We hope he can get it
turned around," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. "The next time
we bring him back we want to keep him here the rest of his
career." The White Sox did not immediately announce a roster move
to fill Wells' roster spot. Manuel said the team could bring up a
position player since outfielders Magglio Ordonez and Jeff Abbott
have minor injuries. ... The White Sox are now 9-1-1 in their last
11 series after winning the first two games and clinching the
three-game set against Boston.
Mariners vs. Rangers
Seattle: The Mariners' 19-8 record in June was the second-best
mark in the majors for that month. The Chicago White Sox were 20-7
in June. ... Since the three division realignment prior to the 1994
season, Seattle has the best record in intra-division play among
the four AL West rivals. The Mariners entered Saturday night with a
123-104 mark in the division. Anaheim was second at 115-113. Texas: The Rangers' 13-3 victory over the Mariners on Friday
night was their largest margin of victory since a 10-0 victory over
Seattle on Sept. 28, 1999. The losing pitcher in that game was John
Halama, who was also tagged with the defeat on Friday night. ...
Even though they won the last three games in June, the Rangers
finished the month at 10-15 (.400), their fewest wins and lowest
winning percentage for any month since June, 1997 (10-17, .370
winning percentage).
Athletics vs. Angels
Oakland: The A's finished this month with a record of 18-7, their best June since going 18-9 in 1992. ... The A's, who started
Saturday night's game only a half-game off Seattle's division lead,
have already spent 27 days in first place, one shy of their
aggregate stay on top from 1993-99. ... John Jaha, one of the
majors' top run producers in 1999 with an RBI every four at-bats
(111 in 457), remains mired in a horrendous slump. Jaha has driven
in a total of five runs in 83 at-bats. Anaheim: SS Kevin Stocker, disabled with left-knee tendinitis,
plans to resume running Monday. He's eligible to be activated
Friday. ... LHP Scott Schoeneweis' return is further off; he was
disabled with a strained rib-cage muscle June 17, and has just
resumed light throwing. ... Rookie C Bengie Molina's .461 average
in June set a club record for any month.

Marlins vs. Expos
Florida: A matchup of Canadian starters was featured on Canada
Day, the country's national holiday. Florida's Ryan Dempster, a
native of Schelt, British Columbia, faced off against Montreal's
Mike Johnson, who is from Edmonton, Alberta. ... Dempster also
participated in the majors' last all-Canadian matchup when he faced
Montreal native Eric Gagne, who was making his major league debut
for Los Angeles last Sept. 7 at Pro Player Stadium. ... Alex
Gonzalez, day-to-day with an injured middle right, missed his fifth
straight start. Dave Berg started in his place. Montreal: 2B Jose Vidro doubled in the eighth inning Friday
night to extend his hitting streak to a career best 13 games.
Vidro, who had a 12-game streak from May 1-14, is hitting .340
(18-for-53) with four doubles, four homers and eight RBIs since
beginning his current streak on June 16.
Pirates vs. Phillies
Pittsburgh: The Pirates went 11-16 last July and lost catcher
Jason Kendall for the remainder of the season on July 4 with a
broken ankle. The club hasn't had a winning record in July since
1997 when it went 16-12. ... Sunday's starter Todd Ritchie (5-4,
4.10 ERA) is coming off his first career shutout -- a 6-0
three-hitter against the Chicago Cubs. Philadelphia: Sunday starter Curt Schilling is 8-4 with a 2.99
ERA in 17 career starts against Pittsburgh. ... The Phillies best
month in 1999 was July when the team went 17-12. ... Despite not
joining the Phillies until May 24, Pat Burrell ranks in the top
five for NL rookies in homers, RBIs and total bases. ... The club
will make its only trip to Milwaukee this season on Monday for a
four-game series.
Braves vs. Mets
Atlanta: Greg Maddux's ERA rose from 2.91, which had been third
in the NL, to 3.37. ... 2B Quilvio Veras fouled a ball off his left
calf in the first inning and left the game in the second. He may be
able to play Sunday. ... Bobby Bonilla, starting his third straight
game, was 2-for-3 with an RBI, raising his average to .281. He has
started 42 of Atlanta's 80 games. New York: Biking for the cycle: Derek Bell travels to Shea
Stadium by bicycle these days. He's living on his boat, moored at
the marina beyond the Shea Stadium parking lot, and pedaled to
Saturday's game on a bike borrowed from the New York Police
Department. ... New York is 14-2 when Al Leiter starts. ... Mike
Piazza is batting .367 (29-for-79) during his 19-game hitting
streak, which matches one by Atlanta's Chipper Jones for the
second-longest in the NL this season. Arizona's Tony Womack had a
24-game hitting streak.
Cubs vs. Brewers
Chicago: The Cubs' maligned bullpen made huge strides in June.
After posting a 6.96 ERA through the seasons first two months, the
unit had a 2.99 ERA in June. The arrivals of Todd Van Poppel on May
12 (2-2, 1.67 ERA), Tim Worrell on May 27 (0-1, 1.65 ERA) and Steve
Rain on June 16 (1-0, 1.50 ERA), all from the minors, have made
major impacts. ... Eric Young tied two single-game team records in
Friday's 5-hour, 31-minute, 15-inning game _ most times reaching
base (seven) and most walks drawn (five). ... The Cubs have played
extra-inning games on consecutive nights three times. Milwaukee: The Brewers purchased the contract of OF Chris Jones
from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned OF Lyle Mouton back down.
Manager Davey Lopes said Mouton, batting .267 overall, wasn't doing
the job in spot duty against left-handed pitching. ... The average
time of game between the Brewers and Cubs this year was 4:15
through their first five meetings.
Astros vs. Cardinals
Houston: The Astros have already used 16 pitchers this season
after using just 15 all last year. ... The NL's winningest pitcher,
Arizona's Randy Johnson (12-2) will meet the League's losingest
pitcher, Jose Lima (1-12) when the Astros return home Tuesday to
start a six-game home stand. ... Houston, which plays 33 of its
last 54 at Enron Field, is 363,920 ahead of last year's franchise
record attendance of 2,706,017. St. Louis: Darryl Kile (11-4) will attempt to become the NL's
second 12-game winner when he faces Scott Elarton (6-3) in the
series finale Sunday. ... Gene Stechschulte, who has had two stints
with the Cardinals this season, was named the organization's minor
league pitcher of the month for June. Stechschulte had seven saves
and a 1.35 ERA at Triple A Memphis. ... Edgar Renteria, who had 10
hits in his last 19 at-bats coming in, led off for the Cardinals
for the second straight day.
Reds vs. Diamondbacks
Cincinnati: Manager Jack McKeon said injuries to Ken Griffey Jr.
and Pokey Reese on Saturday were not serious, and that Griffey
didn't want to come out of the game. .... In 14 games at Bank One
Ballpark, Dante Bichette is hitting .400 with five home runs and 14
RBIs. ... Pinch-hitter Dmitri Young had to be pulled away from home
plate umpire Paul Emmel when he was called for a third strike on
Byung-Hyun Kim's 3-2 pitch to end the game. ... Griffey is 0-for-5
so far in the Arizona series. Arizona: 1B Alex Cabrera, who pulled a groin muscle running out
an RBI double, is to evaluated on Sunday to determine the
seriousness of the injury. The Diamondbacks already have 1B Erubiel
Durazo on the DL with a sore wrist. ... The Diamondbacks finally
beat the Reds in Bank One Ballpark after going 0-7 against
Cincinnati there since the franchise began play. ... RHP Vincente
Padilla joined Jason Conti and Cabrera as Arizona players who got
hits in their first major league at-bats in the past week. Cabrera
homered in his first at-bat Monday, Conti singled Tuesday and
Padilla singled Saturday.
Dodgers vs. Giants
Los Angeles: Former Dodger All-Stars Tommy Davis and Ron Cey
participated in a pregame home run hitting contest for charity, but
neither hit one out in 10 pitches each. Davis came the closest with
a one-hopper to the left-field fence. ... RHP Gregg Olson pitched
one scoreless inning for Class A San Bernardino on Friday in his
first rehab outing in nearly a month. San Francisco: Former Giants Dave Kingman, Jeffrey Leonard, Mike
Ivie, Jack Clark, Bobby Bonds and Kevin Mitchell took part in a
pregame home run hitting contest for charity. They combined for 11
homers, with Mitchell, who plays for the independent Sonoma County
Crushers of the Western Baseball League, leading the way with four.
He also hit the longest. "You can't stop those guys from hitting
home runs," said Giants manager Dusty Baker, who declined to
participate. ... Baker made it official on Saturday that RHP Mark
Gardner would start the second game of the day-night doubleheader
against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Gardner threw 56 pitches
in relief of RHP Russ Ortiz on Friday night, but Baker was assured
Gardner would be ready.
Rockies vs. Padres
Colorado: 3B Jeff Cirillo was back in the lineup and batting leadoff after sitting out Friday night's 5-4 win with flu-like
symptoms. ... The Rockies' victory Friday night was their first in
San Diego since Sept. 20, 1998, when Darryl Kile worked 10 innings.
It was just their third win in 16 games in San Diego dating to June
22, 1997. San Diego: RHP reliever Donne Wall was activated from the 15-day
DL, giving the Padres both of their setup men for the first time
this season. Wall and Steve Montgomery were to share the setup
role, but Montgomery started the season on the DL with a strained
right shoulder. He was activated Tuesday. Wall (2-2, 3.99 ERA) was
on the DL since June 1 with tendinitis in his right shoulder. He
finished a two-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas,
striking out one in two scoreless innings. To make room for Wall,
right-handed reliever Carlos Almanzar was optioned to Las Vegas. He
was 1-3 with a 5.27 ERA in a club-high 37 appearances.
