Hamstring woes shelve Lewis

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Boston placed Darren Lewis on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained left hamstring, making him the third Red Sox outfielder on the DL.

The Red Sox called up pitcher Paxton Crawford from Triple-A Pawtucket to start Saturday's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Lewis, batting .254 with one home run and six RBIs in 43 games, joins outfielders Troy O'Leary and Trot Nixon on the DL.

In other moves, Boston added Ed Sprague, acquired from San Diego in a trade Friday, to the roster, designated right-hander Jason Sekany for assignment and optioned pitcher Sang-Hoon Lee to Pawtucket.

Manager Jimy Williams said outfielder Bernard Gilkey, released by Arizona, will work out for the Red Sox on Sunday.
