NEW YORK -- New York Mets right-hander Rick Reed will be sidelined for two to three weeks after breaking his left wrist.

Reed was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, and the Mets recalled right-hander Jim Mann from Norfolk of the International League.

Mets general manager Steve Phillips wouldn't say who would take Reed's scheduled turn in the rotation Tuesday at Florida. The most likely candidates appear to be a pair of pitchers currently at Triple-A Norfolk: Bobby M. Jones and Grant Roberts.

Reed also strained his left calf while covering first base on a play in the second inning Thursday night, one inning before he hurt his wrist on Marquis Grissom's comebacker.

"It's not as bad as it was last year," said Reed, on the disabled list from April 12-May 3, 1999, because of a slightly torn left calf muscle.

Because of the calf injury, Reed won't be able to throw off a mound for a while.

"I've just go to go introduce myself to the bike," he said.

Reed hopes he can return shortly after the All-Star break, which is July 10-12.

"It gives me a couple more games," he said.

Reed, 34, sustained a fracture of the pisiform bone in the wrist.

"It all depends on how he heals," Mets general manager Steve Phillips said.

Mann was 1-2 with a 3.55 ERA and three saves for Norfolk. He appeared in one game for the Mets earlier this season, allowing two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

New York also signed Jesus Martinez, the younger brother of Pedro Martinez.

Jesus Martinez, 24, has missed 1-1/2 seasons following shoulder surgery and was released by the Cleveland Indians' organization June 24. He was 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA last year for Class-A Sarasota in the Red Sox organization.

In addition, the Mets signed right-hander Robert Keppel, the 36th pick overall in the draft, and three other picks: Arizona State outfielder Jeffrey Duncan (seventh round), Texas-San Antonio catcher Jose Castenada (26th round) and third baseman Justin Wendt (28th round), who played for St. David Catholic High School in Ontario.
