Report: Jays join pursuit of Sosa

Associated Press

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays could be in the running to get Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa.

The Toronto Sun, citing an unnamed major league source, said Saturday that the Blue Jays have offered the Cubs left fielder Shannon Stewart, right-handed pitcher Roy Halladay and a minor league shortstop.

Other teams reported to be trying to trade for Sosa are the New York Yankees, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

Sosa is hitting .319 with 20 home runs and 65 RBI this season, one in which he has been criticized by Cubs manager Don Baylor.

The Sun said the shortstop in the proposed deal would be either Cesar Izturis from Triple-A Syracuse or Felipe Lopez from Double-A Tennessee.

Earlier this week, the Blue Jays played down a report that had them offering the Cubs a three-player package of Halladay, center fielder Jose Cruz and minor league right-hander Leo Estrella.
