BOSTON -- Outfielder Troy O'Leary, slumping in the midst of
a difficult divorce, and left-hander Jeff Fassero were placed on the
15-day disabled list Monday as the Boston Red Sox made a flurry of
moves.

Reliever Bryce Florie was reinstated from the 15-day DL and
reliever Rob Stanifer was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before
Boston's game Monday night against the New York Yankees.
Also, infielder Donnie Sadler was optioned to Pawtucket and
outfielder Curtis Pride was purchased from Pawtucket. Infielder
Andy Sheets, who was not on Boston's 25-man roster, was designated
for assignment.
O'Leary, who hit 28 home runs with 103 RBI last year, was
officially put on the DL because of personal reasons. He was
batting only .211 with five home runs and 17 RBI, and had just 23
hits in his last 120 at-bats (.192).
"He's got some things he's got to take care of and we're going
to leave it at that," Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said.
Players have been put on the DL because of reasons other than
injuries, though the practice is rare.
Last year, reliever Mark Wohlers was put on the disabled list by
Cincinnati with an anxiety disorder. Reds pitcher Pete Harnisch was
placed on the DL a few years back by the New York Mets while battling
depression.
Fassero lasted only two innings Sunday, giving up four runs and
five hits, in a 5-1 loss to Toronto.
On June 9, he allowed four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Fassero then
postponed Friday's scheduled start because of a stiff neck blamed
on a too-fluffy hotel pillow.
Fassero, 37, is 6-3 with a 4.35 ERA in 13 starts.
Sadler was batting .212 with one homer and eight RBI in 24
games. Pride, 31, hit .305 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 48
games at Pawtucket.
Florie had been out since April 10 because of a strained right
groin. Stanifer went from Pawtucket to Boston for the third time
this season.
