Report: A's eye a spot in Silicon Valley

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics have presented major league baseball with a proposal to move the team to Silicon Valley, a California newspaper reported.

According to the Contra Costa Times, the team owners want tentative approval from commissioner Bud Selig before working further with a group that wants to build a privately financed stadium near Great America amusement park in Santa Clara.

This is believed to be the first time the A's have presented the league with a plan to leave their home of 33 years. The team's lease at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland expires after next season.

"We still have a significant amount of work to be done," said Gary Hansen, a member of the Santa Clara Stadium Association. "If the commissioner approves this and the A's move ahead, it gives us the green light to proceed with phase two. Phase one has been very successful."

Team spokesman Jim Young refused to comment on specifics, but he did say Selig "has information in front of him."

"Given the expiration of our lease, it only makes sense to explore all of our options to stay in the Bay Area," Young said.
