Diamondbacks activate Stottlemyre

LOS ANGELES -- The Arizona Diamondbacks activated Todd Stottlemyre on Thursday to start their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned slumping outfielder Turner Ward to Triple-A Tucson.

Stottlemyre hadn't pitched since May 29 against St. Louis, when he was forced out of the game after 5 1/3 innings because of tendinitis in his right elbow and placed on the disabled list for the fourth time in his 13-year career.

Stottlemyre entered Thursday's game -- he will face Dodgers ace Kevin Brown, who is 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA -- with an 8-3 record and a 4.38 ERA. It was his 21st start since a significant tear in his rotator cuff last May.

Ward, 35, batted .173 in 15 games with four RBIs for the Diamondbacks, his fifth major league team. After spending two months in the minors last season rehabbing from an injured right knee, the 11-year veteran switch-hitter was recalled in September and hit three pinch home runs _ including two-run shot in Game 3 of the division series against the New York Mets.
