It's Martinez vs. Clemens, again

NEW YORK -- It's Pedro vs. the Rocket, once again.

Two weeks after their classic duel got all of baseball buzzing, Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens were set for a rematch Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Martinez was originally supposed to start Tuesday night for the Boston Red Sox, but was pushed back because of Monday night's rainout. Clemens will keep his spot in the New York Yankees rotation, with Ramiro Mendoza being skipped.

"I'm looking forward to it," Yankees manager Joe Torre said before Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

"Pedro is a day's work. Hopefully, Roger can match up like he did last time," he said. This matchup will be shown by ESPN2. In fact, there's even a chance the pitchers could hook up again Monday night at Fenway Park.

Martinez declined comment Tuesday night on facing Clemens. A day earlier, he said: "I've done that before, haven't I? I'm here."

On May 28, a sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium and a national audience tuned in to ESPN was treated to a true Sunday night special.

A closer look at Pedro
Below are the day/night splits on Pedro Martinez over the last four years:

  Night 5-1 0.94 48.0 5
1999 Day 10-0 2.58 69.2 20

1997 Day 7-1 1.35 80.0 12

Martinez showed off his Cy Young form, pitching a four-hit shutout and escaping a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 2-0 win.

Clemens, the former Red Sox star and five-time Cy Young winner, matched Martinez zero for zero and struck out 13, but gave up Trot Nixon's two-out, two-run homer in the ninth.

Last October, Martinez and the Red Sox routed Clemens and the Yankees 13-1 in Game 3 of the AL championship series at Boston.

Martinez (9-2) has been nearly unhittable since beating Clemens last month. He leads the majors with an 0.95 ERA and tops the AL with 114 strikeouts.

Clemens (4-6), however, has been hit hard by Atlanta and the New York Mets in his last two starts. This time, Torre was hoping to see signs that Clemens was making improvement.

"We're going to answer some more questions," Torre said.
