MONTREAL -- Yankees right-hander Ramiro Mendoza was
scratched from his start against the Expos on Monday because of
pain in his right shoulder.

David Cone, who pitched a perfect game against the Expos last
July 18, started in Mendoza's place. Cone didn't match his last
start against Montreal, allowing a two-out double to Rondell White
in the first inning followed by Vladimir Guerrero's two-run homer.
Cone was originally scheduled to face Montreal's Javier Vazquez
Tuesday night in what would have been a rematch of the starters in
Cone's perfect game.
The Yankees plan to use a reliever to start in Cone's place Tuesday, depending on who pitches Monday night. Jason Grimsley has
made two starts this year and Mike Stanton started once last season
for New York.
Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch was also taken out of the
starting lineup before the game with a strained left forearm.
Clay Bellinger replaced Knoblauch at second base and left
fielder Ricky Ledee moved up to the leadoff spot and homered off
Montreal's Dustin Hermanson for his first leadoff home run. | |
