Johnson expected to miss just one start

PHOENIX -- Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Randy Johnson will miss his next start to rest a sore pitching shoulder.

"Instead of pushing the issue at this stage of the season, he's going to miss one start on Monday, and that's what our plans are," manager Buck Showalter said after the Diamondbacks' 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.

"We want to see where it goes from there, but we talked to him and Dr. (David) Zeman. Later on this season, he would have taken his start, but you have to be careful with him."

Johnson (9-1) struck out 10 on Wednesday night in the Diamondbacks' 6-2 victory over St. Louis, raising his major league-leading total to 131 and his career mark to 2,824, five more than Cy Young for 14th place on the career list.

But he gave up a season-high nine hits in 7 2/3 innings and matched his season high by walking three.

The next day, he had a cortisone injection.

"Mechanically, he's been a little out of whack, which is giving him some soreness in his shoulder," Showalter said.

Johnson said his shoulder felt tight.

"It's been coming on the last couple of starts," Johnson said. "I've been able to get through it. But I think what we'll do is skip a start and work on my mechanics a little bit because I haven't been all that happy with that, and I think that directly reflects to why my shoulder's sore."

The Diamondbacks play at Texas the next three days, and Johnson's next start would have been the opener of a three-game series against the Cubs in Chicago.

His absence leaves only three of five regulars from the rotation. Right-hander Todd Stottlemyre was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of soreness in his elbow.
