Tigers' Gonzalez day-to-day with foot injury

DETROIT -- Juan Gonzalez missed what would have been his first game against his former team, when he was scratched from Detroit's game against the Texas Rangers on Monday because of a foot injury.

Tigers manager Phil Garner said he didn't know whether Gonzalez would be available for any of the three games against Texas.

"It's day-to-day," Garner said. "But it's worse today."

Gonzalez strained his left foot Saturday during the Tigers' 4-3 victory against Toronto. He was the Tigers' designated hitter and went hitless in Sunday's 12-7 loss to the Blue Jays.

Garner had Gonzalez as the designated hitter in his original lineup Monday but Gonzalez told trainer Russ Miller that the foot was bothering him again.

Garner said the injury is painful when Gonzalez plants the foot during a swing.

"All it has to do is offset you that much," Garner said, holding two fingers less than an inch apart, "and you can't hit."

The series between the Tigers and Rangers is their first meeting since Gonzalez headlined a nine-player deal between the clubs last November.

Gonzalez, a two-time AL Most Valuable Player, is off to a slow start with the Tigers, batting .261 with nine home runs and 19 RBI.
