Realignment plan at heart of meetings

NEW YORK -- Apparently still searching for a consensus on a realignment plan, commissioner Bud Selig postponed the June owners' meetings.

Although dates never were finalized, Selig had been contemplating a meeting at Detroit on June 13-14. In a notice some owners received Tuesday, Selig didn't set a new date, saying only that the meeting would take place during the summer.

Under the realignment plan given the most attention, Arizona would move from the National League West to the American League West, Texas would move from the AL West to the AL Central and Tampa Bay would move from the AL East to the National League, which would realign into four four-team divisions with no wild card.

That would leave six four-team divisions and one six-team division -- the AL Central, which would have the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, Minnesota and Texas. The White Sox, Twins and Royals have objected, saying it would be harder to reach the postseason.

In addition, Arizona wants to stay in the NL West.

Selig was traveling Tuesday and could not immediately be reached.
