CINCINNATI -- Playing their best ball of the season with seven wins in their last eight games, the Cincinnati Reds will be bolstered further by the return of captain Barry Larkin.

The Reds on Tuesday activated their 10-time All-Star shortstop from the 15-day disabled list and optioned rookie shortstop Gookie Dawkins to Double-A Chattanooga.

Larkin, 35, has been sidelined for 21 games with a torn sheath that surrounds the tendon on the middle finger of his left hand. He suffered the injury while diving for a ball in an April 21 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was placed on the disabled list the next day.

Larkin is hitting .355 with two homers and 13 RBI this season. He also has 13 runs scored, six doubles, 12 walks and five stolen bases.

In the first inning of the April 21 game, Larkin recorded his 350th career stolen base. He is a career .300 hitter with 170 home runs and 806 RBI.

Dawkins was recalled when Larkin was originally placed on the DL. He hit .220 with three RBI in 14 games for the Reds.

The Reds were 6-7 in their first 13 games without Larkin before reeling off seven wins in eight games.
