NEW YORK -- John Rocker won't get any support from Derek Jeter. In fact, the New York Yankees shortstop says he has nothing to say to Rocker.
"I wouldn't sit in the same room with him," Jeter told the New York Post. "I wouldn't sit with someone who's a racist. He says he's not a racist, but he makes racist comments." Jeter is the latest to condemn Rocker's comments published in Sports Illustrated last month. The Atlanta Braves closer told the magazine he would never play for a New York team because he didn't want to ride a train "next to some queer with AIDS." He also said, among other rings, "I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. ... How the hell did they get in this country?" and he called a black teammate a "fat monkey." "It was ridiculous," Jeter said. "That's the good thing about New York ... the fact that there are people of different races and nationalities and religions. "I guess we were just brought up differently," said Jeter, whose father is black and mother is Irish. Rocker has since apologized and said he was not a racist. Earlier this month, baseball commissioner Bud Selig ordered Rocker to undergo psychological tests and said he would await the results before deciding on any discipline. |
