Expos hold on to Hermanson

SportsTicker

MONTREAL -- Right-hander Dustin Hermanson on Tuesday became the fourth player to agree to a multiyear deal with the Montreal Expos this offseason, signing a three-year, $15 million contract with a club option for a fourth season.

Hermanson, who was eligible for arbitration, made $2.05 million last season. Tuesday was the final day for players to submit arbitration figures.

The normally cost-conscious Expos have been more aggressive in signing players to long-term deals since the club was purchased by a group headed by New York art dealer Jeffrey Loria. The Expos also have signed pitchers Graeme Lloyd, Hideki Irabu and Anthony Telford to multiyear deals this winter.

Hermanson, 27, was 9-14 with a 4.20 ERA last season, leading the club in innings (216 1/3) and starts (34). He finished strongly by allowing just 24 earned runs in his last 91 innings. He had a 2.95 ERA after the All-Star break.

Hermanson was acquired from San Diego prior to the 1997 season and owns a career record of 35-30.

Tuesday's deal leaves second baseman Wilton Guerrero as the only Expo still eligible for arbitration.
