Diamondbacks re-sign closer Mantei, sign RHP Mike Morgan

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Hard-throwing reliever Matt Mantei, who helped the Arizona Diamondbacks win their first division title last season, today agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.8 million contract with the club.

Mantei may be closing games for a new member of the rotation as Arizona also signed well-traveled righthander Mike Morgan, who signed a minor-league deal and joins his 12th team.

The Diamondbacks filled a gaping hole when they acquired the righthanded Mantei from the Florida Marlins on July 9 for pitchers Vladimir Nunez and Brad Penny and a player to be named.

Throwing a fastball approaching 100 miles per hour, Mantei, 26, went 1-3 with a 2.76 ERA and 32 saves in 37 opportunities. He struck out 99 batters in 65 1/3 innings.

After joining Arizona, Mantei had 20 saves in 23 chances and struck out 49 in 29 innings. He stabilized a bullpen that had blown 14 saves before his arrival.

Mantei's season ended on a down note as he allowed a homer to Todd Pratt that won the game and the National League Division Series for the New York Mets.

Morgan, 39, is coming off a solid season for the Texas Rangers but was not tendered an offer and became a free agent. He went 13-10 with a 6.24 ERA, helping the Rangers win the American League West title.

Morgan's season also included his record 17th career stint on the disabled list with pain in his shin.

Originally drafted fourth overall by Oakland in 1978, Morgan is 134-184 with three saves and a 4.12 ERA in 477 career games, including 406 starts. He began his career with the Athletics on June 11, 1978, a week after graduating high school.

The California native played for Oakland from 1978-79, the New York Yankees in 1982, Toronto in 1983, Seattle from 1985-87, Baltimore in 1988, Los Angeles from 1989-91, the Chicago Cubs from 1992-95 and again in 1998, St. Louis in 1995-96, Cincinnati in 1996-97 and Minnesota in 1998.
