Former major leaguer John Milner dies of cancer

EAST POINT, Georgia (Ticker) -- John Milner, who hit .306 in 10 World Series games, died of cancer on Tuesday, according to Major League Baseball's Web site. He was 50.

A first baseman and outfielder, Milner played a total of 1,215 games for three teams, hitting .249 with 131 home runs and 498 RBI. He hit 20 or more homers twice for the New York Mets.

Milner played his first seven seasons with the Mets, going 8-for-27 in the 1973 World Series, then joined Pittsburgh in 1978 and went 3-for-9 as the Pirates won the 1979 title.

A native of Atlanta who was known as "The Hammer," Milner split his last two seasons between Pittsburgh and the Montreal Expos, retiring in 1982 as a Pirate.
