ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- What a difference two years makes. Chad Ogea, who beat Kevin Brown and the Florida Marlins twice in the 1997 World Series, today was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the Rule 5 draft of players left off major league 40-man rosters. The 29-year-old Ogea was the fourth of 17 players taken in the draft, held during baseball's winter meetings. While Brown is preparing to enter the second year of a seven-year, $105 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Ogea today was claimed for the going rate of $50,000. Non-roster players with three or more years of professional experience were eligible to be selected for $50,000 by teams with openings on their 40-man rosters. Selected players must remain on the 25-man rosters of the selecting teams or be offered back to their previous teams for $25,000. Ogea went 6-12 with a 5.63 earned run average in 28 starts and 36 appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies this past season and became a free agent after the Phillies did not pick up his option for 2000. He signed a minor-league contract with the Detroit Tigers on November 24 and was left off the 40-man roster. A six-year veteran, Ogea spent his first five seasons with the Cleveland Indians, compiling a 31-23 record and a 4.61 ERA. He was traded to the Phillies after the 1998 season for pitcher Jerry Spradlin. The Minnesota Twins made righthanded pitcher Jared Camp the first pick of the Rule 5 draft, plucking the 24-year-old Cleveland prospect from the roster of the Buffalo Bisons, but immediately dealt him to the Florida Marlins. In return, the Twins received the No. 2 pick in the draft, lefthander Johan Santana, and cash from Florida. The Marlins had selected Santana from the Houston Astros organization. Camp, in his fifth season of professional ball, pitched at the Class A, AA and AAA levels in 1999 and compiled a 4-4 record with 12 saves and a 2.81 ERA. He went 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA and held opponents to a .188 batting average in 15 appearances in the Arizona Fall League this year. Two former first-round draft picks were taken in the opening round of today's draft. The Kansas City Royals picked Damian Rolls from the Dodgers farm system with the third pick and the Detroit Tigers grabbed righthanded pitcher Mark Johnson from the New York Yankees organization. The Dodgers picked Rolls in the first round of the 1996 draft and Johnson was taken in the first round by the Houston Astros in 1995. Teams picked in the reverse order of their 1999 regular season records.
