CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs today exercised their club option on catcher Jeff Reed for the 2000 season.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Reed, who turns 37 on Friday, was signed as a free agent on July 8 after being released by the Colorado Rockies six days earlier. Reed batted .260 in 57 games for the Cubs. In 103 combined games last season, Reed hit .258 with 16 doubles, three homers and 28 RBI.

The Illinois native also has played for Minnesota, Montreal, Cincinnati and San Francisco in a major league career that began in 1984.
