Vaughn biggest name to file

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Less than a day after the World Series ended, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Greg Vaughn, who hit 45 homers and had 118 RBI last season, was the biggest name to file for free agency Thursday heading a list of 20 players.

Five players filed from the AL West champion Texas Rangers, who were beaten by the World Champion New York Yankees in the first round: second baseman Luis Alicea, left-hander Jeff Fassero, outfielders Tom Goodwin and Roberto Kelly, and third baseman Todd Zeile.

Four more filed from the the NL Central champion Houston Astros, who were beaten by the National League champion Atlanta Braves in the opening round: catcher Tony Eusebio, shortstop Ricky Gutierrez, outfielder Stan Javier and right-hander Brian Williams.

Braves reserve outfielder Otis Nixon was also the only player from either of the World Series competitors to file Thursday.

Unlike last year, when the free-agent market was filled with some of baseball's biggest stars, the pickings are slim this fall, with few front-line players available.

Among the approximately 140 players potentially eligible to file before the Nov. 11 deadline are Yankees right-hander David Cone, Anaheim left-hander Chuck Finley and Seattle outfielder Jay Buhner.

Several players are waiting to find out if teams exercise their options, a group that includes the Yankees' Paul O'Neill, Texas' Juan Gonzalez and Houston's Craig Biggio.

In addition, veteran players traded during multiyear contracts have the right to file trade demands between now and Nov. 11. That group includes Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, who won the fourth and final game of the World Series Wednesday. New York acquired him from Toronto at the start of spring training in a deal for David Wells.

Below is the list of 20 players who filed Thursday for free agency. Eligible players may file through Nov. 11 (x-team option for 2000; y-player option for 2000; z-mutual option for 2000):
