Former Rockies GM Bob Gebhard accepts position with Cardinals

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Bob Gebhard, who resigned under pressure as general manager of the Colorado Rockies on August 20, today was named assistant to the general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Gebhard will begin working with general manager Walt Jocketty this weekend and concentrate on day-to-day operations of the club as well as player evaluations.

"Adding Bob to our staff is a tremendous asset for the Cardinals," Jocketty said. "His outstanding experience and background as a player, coach, farm director and general manager will be a great benefit to many facets or our operation."

Gebhard was the only GM in the history of the Rockies, taking the team to the playoffs in just their third season. Despite the addition of well-respected manager Jim Leyland and a talented offense, Gebhard saw Colorado respond with a lackluster season.

Gebhard, 56, ended a successful stint with the Minnesota Twins to join the Rockies, constructing the team from scratch. By 1995, his team won the first NL wild card.

With the likes of Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, Vinny Castilla and Dante Bichette, the Rockies posted the best opening six-year winning percentage (.484) of any expansion team in history. Galarraga spent five seasons in Colorado before signing with the Atlanta Braves.

Gebhard, who pitched in 11 major league seasons with Minnesota and Montreal, worked in the Twins' front office when they won World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.
