Marlins activate OF Floyd; place RHP Fernandez on 60-day DL

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Florida Marlins today activated oft-injured outfielder Cliff Floyd from the 60-day disabled list and placed righthander Alex Fernandez on the 60-day DL after determining on Sunday that he would not pitch again this season.

Expected to be a major cog in the Marlins' lineup this year, Floyd has played in only 46 games, batting .275 with nine doubles, one triple, seven homers and 33 RBI. Last year, he hit .282 with 22 homers and 90 RBI in 153 games in his first full season with Florida. Floyd was placed on the 15-day DL on June 21 with a small tear in his right Achilles tendon and transferred to the 60-day DL on July 17. He also was sidelined earlier this year with a tear of the meniscus in his left knee.

Floyd, who re-signed a four-year deal in January, has been on the DL five times in his seven-year career. He suffered a career-threatening wrist injury in May 1995 that sidelined him for the rest of the season. A hamstring injury placed him on the DL twice in 1997.

After missing the entire 1998 season while recovering from a torn rotator cuff, Fernandez went 7-8 with a 3.38 ERA in 24 starts this season. He pitched 141 innings and allowed 135 hits with 91 strikeouts and 41 walks. He spent two stints on the disabled list this season due to inflammation in his shoulder and a pulled groin.

Fernandez defeated the San Diego Padres, 6-4, on Saturday in his last appearance and belted his third homer of the season to set a record for Florida pitchers.

The Marlins also recalled pitcher Brent Billinglsey and infielder Derrek Lee from Triple-A Calgary of the Pacific Coast League and purchased the contract of catcher John Roskos and pitcher Reid Cornelius from the Cannons.

Florida recalled pitchers Hector Almonte and Michael Tejera from Double-A Portland of the Eastern League and placed pitcher Joe Fontenot on the 60-day DL.
