Line of the Day Brian Jordan A grand slam was his only hit of the night, but it made him a hero in L.A.
| |
Hero of the
day Dodgers CF Marquis Grissom robbed Rich Aurilia of a home run in the ninth inning, reaching over the center field wall to preserve the Dodgers' 7-6 victory over the Giants.
Goat of the day Angels reliever Al Levine never had a chance. Entering the game in the top of the ninth trying to preserve a 3-3 tie with the A's, Levine got only one out and gave up three hits, including one to Miguel Tejada that drove in the winning run.
Streak of the day Angels 3B Troy Glaus hit a three-run shot in the first inning to match a major league record with a home run in four consecutive at-bats. He struck out in his second at-bat.
Stat of the day Attendance in Florida was 6,103 for Brad Penny bobblehead night, leaving the Marlins with almost 9,000 dolls left over. The Marlins are also having a second Julian Tavarez
bobblehead giveaway Tuesday. The team had 15,000 Tavarez dolls to give away Sunday, but only 7,844 fans attended the game, leaving plenty of leftovers for Tavarez's next start.
The last word ''I would beg to differ if you could find me a better catch in a more critical situation than was made by Marquis Grissom to start the ninth inning. That was as good a major league game as you would ever want to witness.'' -- Dodgers manager Jim Tracy

Tris Speaker, who hit 53 doubles in 1912, for second place on
Boston's single-season record list for doubles... With a win
against Baltimore next Sunday, Pedro Martinez will join Derek Lowe
as the first Red Sox teammates to win 20 games in the same season
since Mel Parnell (25-7) and Ellis Kinder (23-6) in 1949. That team
finished 96-58, one game behind the New York Yankees for the AL
pennant. ... Manager Grady Little went with a makeshift lineup in
the second game of a day-night doubleheader Monday, batting Carlos
Baerga cleanup. Shane Andrews started at third base and Freddy
Sanchez was at second.

after being activated from the disabled list with a sprained left
ankle, will get regular playing time for the remainder of the
season, manager Carlos Tosca said. Cruz, who is hitting .241 after
a career-high .274 average in 2001, swung a bat for the first time
since Aug. 9 on Sunday and hit the second pinch-hit homer of his
career. ''For his own peace of mind, we'd like to have him put a
few weeks together and go home that way,'' Tosca said. ... OF
Vernon Wells entered Monday's game in a career-worst 0-for-24
slump, though Tosca wasn't particularly concerned. ''He's just
missed a lot of balls and pops up,'' Tosca said. ''He's not
chasing.'' ... C-DH Josh Phelps' .311 average leads American League
rookies.
BALTIMORE: The Orioles recalled LHP Eric DuBose from Double-A
Bowie on Monday. DuBose, 26, was 5-3 with three saves and a 2.51
ERA at Bowie. He will replace LHP Yorkis Perez, who was placed on
the 60-day disabled list following an appendectomy last week to
open up a spot on the 40-man roster for DuBose. ''I don't know if
we'll throw him in the mix right off the bat. We'll try to get him
in a game or two in relatively mild circumstances,'' manager Mike
Hargrove said. ... OF Melvin Mora returned from his three-game
suspension as a result of a July 28 brawl in Boston. ... The

DETROIT: RHP Matt Anderson threw off the mound for the first
time since injuring his shoulder in early June. Anderson hopes to
be activated as early as the middle of the week. ''I haven't talked
to the trainers, but it feels good to me,'' he said. ''I don't see
any reason that I wouldn't be ready to go this week.'' ... Tigers
trainer Russ Miller announced that he will retire at the end of the
season. Miller, 59, joined the Tigers in 1991 after 11 years as the
head trainer for the University of Michigan. ''This is an actual
retirement -- I don't have plans for anything else right now,'' he
said. ''I'm sure I'll have opportunities for other things, but I'm
looking forward to spending time with my wife.'' ... Tigers
announcer Ernie Harwell returned to work Monday after leaving
during Sunday's game to be with his wife, Lulu. She was taken to
the hospital on Sunday after complaining about an accelerated
heartbeat, and is expected to remain there for another couple days.
Ernie Harwell reported that she is in ''good spirits''.
KANSAS CITY: The Royals face a possible catcher shortage, as
both Brent Mayne and A.J. Hinch are waiting for word to fly home
for the birth of a child. Mayne is expecting his third child, while
Hinch and his wife will be having their first. ''It's a unique
situation,'' Hinch said. ''At any other position it wouldn't matter
if a guy disappears for three or four days, but we've only got two
catchers and we are both waiting.'' ... Neifi Perez started at 2B
Monday, his first appearance there this season. ... The Royals need

growing up and had made that known to the clubhouse personnel with
the Cardinals. They got Smith to autograph a jersey and shipped it

their staffs this year. He failed with the Mets and is 1-3 with a

explanation for it. It hasn't been a lot of fun.''
PITTSBURGH: The Pirates have used nine different leadoff hitters
this season. September callup Tony Alvarez became the latest on
Sunday. Alvarez also became the sixth different player to get a
start in CF, a position that's still open after 150 games. General
manager Dave Littlefield says the team needs to get better
production from center, right field and first base next season. ...
The Pirates' last homestand of the season is also the longest -- 10
