FRIDAY'S TIDBITS

Line of the Day

Curt Schilling
Criminy! This guy stinks!

At least he did Friday.

Hero of the day
Unspectacular Mike Bordick set a major league record for steadiness, completing his 102nd consecutive game at shortstop without an error. Bordick cleanly handled all four of his chances in the Orioles' 4-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Goat of the day
Everybody has beaten up on the Devil Rays this year … everyone, that is, except Esteban Loaiza. The Blue Jays' starter suffered his third loss in five starts against Tampa Bay this summer, giving up a career-high nine runs in just 2 2/3 innings.

Injuries

  • Twins starter Rick Reed left the game as a precaution with a knee injury after slipping on the wet mound as he warmed up for the fourth inning. The White Sox scored nine of their 10 runs off Twins relievers after Reed left.

  • Yankees 1B Jason Giambi was held out because of a stiff back and is day to day. The good news for New York is that the Yankees expect RHP Mariano Rivera to pitch Saturday or Sunday. Rivera has been on the DL with a strained right shoulder since Aug. 19 and was on the DL with the same injury from July 26-Aug. 8.

  • Cubs 2B Bobby Hill left the game in the first inning after he was flipped over by Abraham Nunez's slide. The Cubs reported Hill had a strained neck and a headache after he landed on the back of his head. X-rays revealed no breaks.

  • Cardinals starter Woody Williams, making his fifth start since coming off his second stint on the disabled list for a pulled muscle in his left side, left the game with two outs in the fifth and a 5-3 lead. The team said Williams experienced tightness in his back and rib cage.

  • Rockies ace Mike Hampton won't pitch again this season. Hampton has missed his last two starts because of a strained ligament in his right foot.

    Streak of the day
If indeed the Expos' tenure in Montreal is coming to an end, the Expos are finishing with a flourish. Montreal won its seventh straight game Friday, improving to 78-76 and increasing its lead in the race for second in the NL East to 2.5 games.

    Stat of the day
It's as bad as it's ever been for the Brewers, who set a franchise record with their 99th loss Friday (to the Giants). The team's previous low-water mark came in 1969, when it lost 98 times in its single season as the Seattle Pilots.

    The last word
"It's an unbelievable feeling for us right now. I know DK is watching and smiling. I wish he was in here with us right now."
-- Cardinals pitcher Matt Morris, putting to words the Cardinals' feelings on clinching the division title and remembering teammate Darryl Kile, who died suddenly in June.

  • AMERICAN LEAGUE
    Red Sox at Orioles
Boston: The Red Sox started their final road trip of the season Friday, a seven-game jaunt through Baltimore and Chicago. The Red Sox began the trip with a major league best 46-28 record on the road. None of Boston's last 11-games comes against an opponent with a winning record. ... The Red Sox began play Friday knowing that any combination of two wins by the Yankees or Angels, and two losses by the Red Sox will eliminate Boston from playoff contention. ... Nomar Garciaparra doubled in the first inning, his 53rd of the season, tying Tris Speaker for second place on the team's single-season list. The record is 67 by Earl Webb. ... Boston has hit at least one double in 57 of its last 62 games and has a two-base hit in 136 of its 153 games. ... Saturday's starting pitcher, John Burkett, is 1-7 with a 6.24 ERA in 10 games against the Orioles over his career. Baltimore: After hearing about the attack on Kansas City first base coach Tom Gamboa on Thursday in Chicago, Baltimore first base coach and former catcher Rick Dempsey remembered times he's encountered overzealous fans. "I've been slapped on the back of the head three or four times (by fans) and had my hat stolen three times. You know you could get the guy if you wanted to, but there's no sense going up in there.'' ... SS Mike Bordick was traded to the Mets in 2000 to replace an injured Rey Ordonez for New York's pennant run. He hit .260 in 56 games and re-signed with Baltimore after the season ended. Bordick on Thursday tied Ordonez's major league record for most consecutive errorless games at shortstop (101). ... Through Thursday, the Orioles have hit 158 homers for the season, 22 more than all of last year. ... Jeff Conine was 2-for-17 following a six-game hitting streak.

    Yankees at Tigers
New York: Joe Torre expects RHP Mariano Rivera to pitch on Saturday or Sunday in Detroit. Rivera was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right shoulder on Aug. 19 and was on the DL with the same injury from July 26-Aug. 8. "I'm feeling good,'' Rivera said. ... 1B Jason Giambi was not in the lineup Friday because of a stiff back. Torre said if Giambi's back "loosened up,'' he may play Saturday or Sunday. ... Bernie Williams was scheduled to DH on Friday as he continues to be hobbled with a cyst behind his left knee. "The knee is obviously a concern,'' Williams said. "But it's not a concern enough to miss games that are going to matter in the postseason.'' ... RHP Jeff Weaver, who was sent to New York from Detroit in a three-way trade in July, said it was weird to be in Comerica Park's visiting clubhouse for the first time. "I'm happy in New York, but I feel like I should still be here,'' said Detroit's first-round pick from the 1998 draft. "I still don't understand why I was traded. I signed a long-term contract last winter and (Tiger president Dave Dombrowski) cut my time here short. I'm still bitter about that.'' ... According to the Elias Sports Bureau, if LHP Andy Pettitte (11-5) wins one more game, he will be the first pitcher in the post-expansion era (1961) to win 12 or more games in his first eight seasons. Pettitte was scheduled to start Saturday. Detroit: RHP Matt Anderson was available to pitch Friday for the first time since going on the disabled list with a shoulder injury on May 19. "It's huge for me to have the chance to just get out there again,'' Anderson said. "I'll know what I need to build on and work on during the offseason by getting out there at least a couple times. My body feels ready, but I've got to get my mind ready too. With that part of it, you never know until you get out there.'' ... The Tigers recalled outfielders Craig Monroe and Andres Torres from Triple-A Toledo. Manager Luis Pujols said he planned to play Monroe in left and Torres in center regularly for the rest of the season. ... Pujols said OF Bobby Higginson (strained abdominal) will be out at least five more days. ... Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who will retire next week after 55 major league baseball seasons, earned another honor Friday. The Guinness Book of World Records said Harwell will be named in a new category, "Most Enduring Baseball Announcer,'' for his seven decades of work. Harwell has called more than 8,000 games, starting with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 and continuing with the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles before calling Tigers games in 1960.

    Blue Jays at Devil Rays
Toronto: The Blue Jays were 37-30 through Thursday since the All-Star break. "I think we've accomplished some of the things we wanted to accomplish in the second half,'' manager Carlos Tosca said. "We've got of the younger kids up, got them in the lineup and they've been producing.'' 3B Eric Hinske and DH Josh Phelps, who was called up July 2, lead all rookies in RBI. ... C Kevin Cash, who went to high school in Tampa, got the start. It was his first game at Tropicana Field. Cash was called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Sept. 3. Tampa Bay: The incident involving two fans attacking Kansas City coach Tom Gamboa on Thursday was a major pregame topic. In the past C John Flaherty said when a fan went on the field, they would do something like run the bases. "It's definitely changed the outlook,'' Flaherty said. "Now the thought will be, what will he do? Will he have a knife?'' ... LF Greg Vaughn hasn't played since hurting his right shoulder June 22. In the third season of $34 million, four-year contract, Vaughn is focusing on getting healthy. "I want to be out there,'' Vaughn said. "Sometimes you have to use common sense.'' Whether he returns next year, Vaughn said its the team's decision. ... The Devil Rays claimed RHP Dan Reichert off waivers from Kansas City and designated LHP Jason Jimenez for assignment. Manager Hal McRae said it has not been determined if Reichert will pitch before the season ends.

    Indians at Royals
Cleveland: The Indians entered Friday's action with a 4-9 record against Kansas City in 2002. They are 3-3 in Cleveland (with three games remaining September 27-29) and 1-6 in Kansas City (with games remaining Friday through Sunday). The Indians were 11-8 against Kansas City in 2001. ... Outfielder Alex Escobar, out all season after reconstructive knee surgery in spring training, joined Cleveland's Florida Instructional League program in Winter Haven, Fla. He was scheduled to begin full baseball activities Friday. A decision on winter baseball is pending. Kansas City: The Royals purchased the contract of pitcher Wes Obermueller from Double-A Wichita. Obermueller made his major league debut in Friday's game. He was 14-5 during the minor league season, including 5-0 Single-A Wilmington and 9-5 for Wichita. He pitched 151 1-3 inning with a 2.85 ERA for the two clubs. ... Kansas City also recalled pitcher Ryan Bukvich from Wichita. Bukvich has appeared in 23 games for Kansas City this season compiling a 1-0 record with a 6.14 ERA. ... Mike Sweeney was back in the lineup Friday after missing Thursday's game in Chicago with stiffness in his back.

    Twins at White Sox
Minnesota: Manager Ron Gardenhire said his team didn't have any fears about coming to Comiskey Park a night after Royals coach Tom Gamboa was attacked by a father and son who came out of the stands. "Something like that's going to stick in your head,'' Gardenhire said. "We've always had a lot of fun here. We've never had a problem.'' 1B Doug Mientkiewicz got another night off to rest his sore back. "Doug came in today and said he could play,'' Gardenhire said. "I thought I'd give him another day. I'll play him for sure tomorrow.'' ... LF Jacque Jones, who sprained his ankle sliding into second base Tuesday night, probably won't play this series. "By the time we get home, he should be fine,'' Gardenhire said. ... Rookie Michael Ryan, whose major league debut got rained out Thursday night, got another shot Friday. Ryan had two singles and two RBI in the first inning Thursday night, but none of it counted because the game was called for rain before it became official. ... The Twins are one of the best stories in baseball, going from contraction candidate to AL Central champions. But Gardenhire said he hasn't given any thought to possible postseason awards, like manager of the year. "I don't worry about that, I honestly don't,'' he said. "We had a goal in spring training to get to the (playoffs) and we did that.'' Chicago: 2B Willie Harris, criticized by some for not going to Kansas City coach Tom Gamboa's aid after he was attacked by a father and son who came out of the stands Thursday night, said he still isn't quite sure what happened. "I was there and before I could even go over there, half of the Royals were already there,'' Harris said. "I didn't know if I should have jumped in or not.'' Manager Jerry Manuel defended Harris. "That's something you don't train anybody for, you don't talk about it,'' Manuel said. "I'm sure he was more in shock.'' ... Manuel is pleased with what he's seen from Todd Ritchie, who is pitching out of the bullpen as he tries to salvage his season. Ritchie, acquired for Kip Wells in an off-season trade with the Pirates, is 5-15. "I think he's done a few things with his delivery to afford him the ability to keep the ball low,'' Manuel said. "We'd like to see him keep that delivery for an extended period of time. But I have been excited to see him get up, get in a game and throw strikes after an extended period of time.'' ... Though Rocky Biddle took the loss in Thursday night's game, Manuel said he thought the converted reliever pitched well. Biddle, trying to win a spot in next year's rotation, allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. "Seventy-some pitches has been kind of his max,'' Manuel said. "Maybe next time we'll extend him.'' ... The White Sox play the Twins in six of their last nine games.

    Angels at Mariners
Anaheim: RHP Aaron Sele, who is on the DL with a partially torn muscle in his pitching shoulder, pitched a simulated game Friday before the Angels' game with the Mariners. He pitched a simulated game Tuesday in Oakland. He threw about 30 pitches Friday. "It was fine. It felt pretty good,'' Sele said. If the Angels make the playoffs, they may not put Sele on their roster. He made his last start Aug. 20. They probably would have to use him in their bullpen in the playoffs because he would be lacking stamina and arm strength. Anaheim's rotation for the playoffs is expected to be LHP Jarrod Washburn, RHP Kevin Appier, RHP Ramon Ortiz and rookie RHP John Lackey. "My goal is to pitch in the playoffs,'' said Sele, who is 8-9 with a 4.91 ERA in 25 starts and 155 2-3 innings in his first season in Anaheim. Manager Mike Scioscia referred questions about Sele's playoff status to general manager Bill Stoneman. "You'll have to talk to Bill,'' Scioscia said. "But we haven't gone that far to be honest with you.'' Seattle: CF Mike Cameron had 164 strikeouts with nine games remaining, 11 shy of the Mariners' team record of 175 set by Jay Buhner in 1997. The AL record is 186 strikeouts by Rob Deer of Milwaukee in 1987. ... RF Ichiro Suzuki has 30 stolen bases and has been caught stealing 14 times this season. When Suzuki was the AL MVP last season, he led the majors with 56 stolen bases and was caught stealing 14 times. ... The Mariners left 61 men on base in their four-game series with Texas, all extra-inning games. ... LHP Jamie Moyer, who gave up seven runs in four innings in Thursday night's 12-7, 10-inning loss to Texas, saw his ERA jump from 3.11 to 3.34. That was his 33rd start of the season. Last season, when Moyer became the oldest pitcher to win 20 games for the first time at 38, he was 20-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 33 starts.

    Rangers at Athletics
Texas: Manager Jerry Narron canceled batting practice for his road-weary team as it opened a three-game series. Friday night's game was the 32nd in a row for the Rangers without a day off. Texas gets to rest on Monday before finishing the season with six games in Arlington. ... Alex Rodriguez got an extra jolt of satisfaction from Texas' 12-7 victory over Seattle on Thursday, which nearly extinguished the Mariners' playoff hopes. After he hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, Rodriguez stared down someone sitting behind the Mariners' dugout. A-Rod said he wasn't looking at a heckling fan: "Let's just say it was a representation of the opposition.'' Rodriguez played 5{ seasons in Seattle. ... Jason Hart, still looking for his first major league hit, got the start at first base against the team that traded him during the winter. Oakland got first base prospect Carlos Pena and reliever Mike Venafro in the multiplayer deal for Hart, once considered the heir apparent to Jason Giambi at first base. Oakland: The A's changed a minor league affiliation, ending their association with Visalia of the California League and starting a two-year agreement with Kane County (Ill.) of the Midwest League. ... Randy Velarde got another start at first base on Friday night. The veteran utility infielder is playing in place of Olmedo Saenz, whose hand injury has made him unavailable when manager Art Howe wants a right-handed bat at first base. ... A-Rod's pick for the AL Cy Young award? A's left-hander Barry Zito. "He's scary,'' Rodriguez said. "I'm a big fan of watching him pitch.'' Rodriguez was asked what he thinks of the fact Texas drafted Zito in 1998, but couldn't sign him: "Well, after I throw up, I throw up again. He's incredible.''

    NATIONAL LEAGUE
    Cubs at Pirates
Chicago: RHP Kerry Wood said one reason for the Cubs' decline is the absence of veteran players who brought professionalism to the clubhouse. Wood said he hopes the Cubs will consider the character of the players they acquire this offseason. He said the team misses players like Ricky Guttierez, Eric Young, Matt Stairs and Ron Coomer. "They did their business,'' Wood said. "We didn't have that chemistry this year.'' ... Rookie Hee Seop Choi started his second consecutive game at first base. Manager Bruce Kimm said playing time at first will probably be a 50-50 split between Choi and veteran Fred McGriff. "It's a case where Choi needs to get his at bats and at the same time give Fred a chance to get that 30th home run,'' Kimm said. McGriff needs one homer to become the first player to have at least 30 home runs for five different franchises. Pittsburgh: The Pirates play six of their last nine games against the Cubs as Chicago RF Sammy Sosa chases his 500th home run. What's the pitching plan for Sosa? "Same as always,'' manager Lloyd McClendon said. "If walking him gives us the opportunity to win, we'll do it. We're trying to win as many games as we can. We won't handle it any differently than we did Bonds.'' Pirates RHP Kip Wells gave up Barry Bonds' 600th career homer earlier in this season in San Francisco. "We won the game, though,'' McClendon said. ... RF Armando Rios injured his right knee in the second game he played for the Pirates last season after he was acquired from the Giants. He had reconstructive surgery and has struggled with his recovery this year. For all practical purposes, Rios has been healthy for only one day since joining the Pirates. "We haven't seen the player we know he can be,'' McClendon said. "It's frustrating for us and for him.''

    Expos at Mets
Montreal: The Expos came in with a six-game winning streak, and were 3-0 on a six-game road trip. They had not won a road trip since their first of the year, going 5-4 April 5-14. ... OF Vladimir Guerrero reached 100 runs scored for the fifth time, a team record. ... RHP Britt Reames had gone 10 consecutive appearances without allowing a run, a span of 16 innings. New York: RHP David Weathers began serving a two-game suspension for hitting a batter with a pitch in Colorado. The suspension was reduced from three games after he appealed. Manager Bobby Valentine is scheduled to have a conference call next week concerning his appeal of a one-game suspension. ... OF Timo Perez did not start because of chest congestion. He was replaced in center field by Raul Gonzalez. ... 3B Edgardo Alfonzo, who did not start Thursday because of a stomach virus, was back in the lineup. ... LHP Mike Bacsik has been moved to the bullpen for this turn in the rotation. "We might slip him back in,'' Valentine said. "He's out this time around because of the off day.'' Bacsik is 3-2 with a 4.53 ERA in 10 games, nine starts. "It has nothing to do with his performance,'' Valentine said. "His performance rates in the rotation. He doesn't need to prove anything more this season.'' ... Discussing a newspaper report that at least seven Mets have used marijuana this season, Valentine said he tries to avoid confronting players about possible alcohol or drug use. "I've had very bad experiences with confrontation,'' he said. "That's why the Employee Assistance Program is there, to keep the manager out of it. That's why it's set up that way. Since I've been here, the few times I've intervened personally I've been burned so badly I don't go next to the stove again. I don't like getting calls from agents.''

    Marlins at Braves
Florida: INF Andy Fox stole his 30th base of the season Thursday night, helping the Marlins establish a new team record with 169. If 1B Derrek Lee steals another base to reach 20, it would give Florida six 20-steal players, the first that's happened since the 1980 Houston Astros. The other Marlins players with at least 20 are 2B Luis Castillo (45), Fox, OF Eric Owens (25), RF Juan Encarnacion (20) and CF Preston Wilson (20). ... The next pinch hit for OF Tim Raines will be his 14th of the season, tying the Florida record. ... Wilson missed his second straight game with an inflammation in his left big toe. Atlanta: Before the game, the Braves honored their minor league players of the year from each level. RHP Trey Hodges, who went 15-9 with a 3.19 ERA at Triple-A Richmond before called up Sept. 3, was that team's pitcher of the year, and OF Jeff Francoeur, a first-round pick in this year's draft, was player of the year for Rookie League Danville. Francoeur hit .327 with eight home runs and 31 RBI in 38 games. ... Manager Bobby Cox needs four more victories to become the first manager in NL history to record five 100-win seasons. ... The 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night was Atlanta's 15th shutout, breaking a tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers for most in the National League.

    Giants at Brewers
San Francisco: The Giants arrived at their team hotel in Milwaukee around 6:30 a.m. Friday. Thursday night, they lost 6-3 to the Dodgers in Los Angeles, splitting a four-game series. It's the Giants only trip to Miller Park this season. ... Robb Nen's next save will be his 40th, marking the fourth time in his 10 seasons that he's reached that plateau. Trevor Hoffman with five and Dennis Eckersley with four are the only other pitchers to have four 40-save seasons. His next save also moves him into a tie with Tom Henke (311) for 11th place on the all-time career list.... RHP Jason Schmidt (11-8, 3.63 ERA) makes his first start against Milwaukee this season Saturday and his ninth career appearance overall. Milwaukee: The Brewers acquired minor-league RHP Pedro Liriano, 22, from Anaheim as the second player to be named in the trade that sent Alex Ochoa to the Angels in July. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent, he was 10-14 with a 3.60 ERA at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. ... RHP Ben Diggins (0-2, 9.22 ERS) makes his debut against the Giants on Saturday in his fourth career start.

    Astros at Cardinals
Houston: RHP Wade Miller puts his NL-best 11-game winning streak on the line on Saturday against the Cardinals' Matt Morris. Miller is one win shy of Mark Portugal's club-record 12 consecutive victories in 1993. ... Lance Berkman is only the fifth switch hitter in major league history to hit 40 or more homers, joining Mickey Mantle, Chipper Jones, Todd Hundley and Ken Caminiti. ... RHP Dave Mlicki will start on Monday at Milwaukee in place of Brad Lidge, who has a left rib-cage strain. .... OF Richard Higalgo did not accompany the team on the six-game trip because of a strained right hip flexor. He has not played since Sept. 9. ... RHP Ricky Stone had 74 appearances, four shy of tying the NL rookie record of 78 set by Tim Burke of the Expos in 1985. St. Louis: Closer Jason Isringhausen, who has 31 saves in 35 chances, likely won't pitch much more during the regular season because of a sore shoulder that's bothered him off-and-on the last month. Manager Tony La Russa said Isringhausen was unavailable on Friday and that he'd be day-to-day, but added that he'd like Isringhausen to get some work before the playoffs. Isringhausen has made four appearances since Aug. 25. ... The bullpen had given up only 16 runs in the last 63 1-3 innings since Aug. 31 and closing duties will fall to Dave Veres and Steve Kline. ... C Mike Matheny was in the lineup, two days after getting a scare when he was hit by a pitch. X-rays showed a bruise. ... The lineup card had a few holes before SS Edgar Renteria, who had a sore back after a hard slide into home plate in Colorado, was cleared to play.

    Diamondbacks at Rockies
Arizona: The Diamondbacks will adjust their rotation for the St. Louis series next week if they clinch the NL West title Saturday or Sunday in Denver. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling would be scratched from their scheduled starts next Tuesday and Wednesday against the Cardinals. "If we did (clinch), we would push Randy and Curt out of the St. Louis series,'' manager Bob Brenly said. "We would need to clinch before making any plans for the postseason.'' ... Brenly said he would use Johnson's last start on Sept. 26 against the Rockies in Phoenix as a tuneup for the playoffs. "We would keep the pitch count down, ideally going five innings and get him out of there without thinking about high strikeout totals or extending him deep into the ballgame,'' Brenly said. ... RHP Armando Reynoso and RHP John Patterson would be Brenly's choices to replace Johnson and Schilling against the Cardinals. ... Aside from 3B Matt Williams, Arizona had little knowledge of Colorado starter Randy Flores. Williams homered off Flores while on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tucson and Flores was at Oklahoma. "We have some tape and a scouting report on him,'' Brenly said. "Our club has shown an ability to adjust to an unfamiliar pitcher, and I'm confident we'll be fine.'' ... OF Luis Gonzalez entered the game an RBI short of his fourth consecutive 100-RBI season. Colorado: LHP Mike Hampton, who already has missed two straight starts with a strained ligament in his right foot, won't pitch again this season. Manager Clint Hurdle said there have been signs of improvement, but Hampton continues to wear a walking boot. "We felt the best thing to do was to immobilize it and let him get well,'' Hurdle said. "We didn't feel we could get him 100 percent to pitch before the end of the season. If it were the seventh game of the World Series, he'd probably limp out there and get it done or at least try to get it done. That's not the case.'' Hampton, in the second year of an eight-year, $121 million contract, has been a disappointment this season, going 7-15 with a 6.15 ERA. ... OF Jay Payton was back in the lineup, nine days after straining his right oblique muscle. Payton made a pinch-hit appearance Thursday. "What we're going to do is start him and try to run him out there for maybe half the game, get two or three at-bats and bring him out,'' Hurdle said. "We'll see how he feels (Saturday) and see if we can lengthen him out to a full game.'' Payton said he had an oblique muscle injury in 1998 that took him a long time to recover from. This one, he said, "is farther down my side, so it's not quite as bad.'' ... OF Larry Walker also returned to the lineup. He departed Thursday's game in the fourth inning after aggravating a sore left shoulder on a slide into home. The injury has bothered him the past two weeks. ... Hurdle would like former Rockies pitching coach Marcel Lachemann, currently a special assistant to general manager Dan O'Dowd, to join the club as bench coach. Lachemann left the Rockies bench last October, citing the rigors of the job and relentless travel. He underwent surgery for prostate cancer in April but has regained his strength.

    Phillies at Reds
Philadelphia: Friday's postponement was the second this season for the Phillies. They also had a June 6 game against Florida called because of rain. ... Randy Wolf, who was scheduled to start Friday night, will start the second game on Saturday. Hector Mercado will start the earlier game. ... Pat Burrell has 37 homers, the most by any Phillies player since Mike Schmidt hit a NL-leading 37 in 1986. Schmidt was the last Phillies player with more than that. He hit a league-leading 40 in 1983. ... Schmidt, who works with players occasionally, is accompanying the team for the weekend. He'll play in an exhibition softball game Monday with Pete Rose at Cinergy Field. Cincinnati: The Reds will make up Friday's game as part of the first day-night doubleheader in the stadium's 32-year history. ... Fans who can't make it to the makeup game can get vouchers toward a ticket to a game next season in Great American Ball Park. ... 1B Sean Casey will have to keep his left arm in a sling for one more week. He had surgery last week to repair a torn labrum and muscles in the back of the shoulder. ... Danny Graves, who was scheduled to start Friday night, will pitch the night game on Saturday. Elmer Dessens will start the first game.

    Dodgers at Padres
Los Angeles: Manager Jim Tracy said Hideo Nomo would start on short rest if Los Angeles and San Francisco end up tied for the NL wild card, requiring a playoff game at the Giant's Pacific Bell Park. Odalis Perez, who pitched a seven-hitter to beat San Francisco 6-3 on Thursday night, is to start the season finale at home against San Diego on Sept. 29. Tracy said he might need to tinker with his rotation depending on the situation. ... "Depending on how things go, there still could come a situation where we are going to have to put a game together somewhere,'' Tracy said. ... Six of the eight Padres position players in Friday night's lineup had career averages of .324 or better against Dodgers starter Andy Ashby. San Diego: Ryan Klesko needs one homer to reach 30 for the third time. He had a career-high 34 with Atlanta in 1996 and 30 last year, his second in San Diego. ... RHP Trevor Hoffman needs two saves for his fifth straight 40-save season and his sixth in seven seasons.
