NEW YORK: The Yankees dedicated a monument to the "victims and heroes'' of Sept. 11 in Monument Park during a pregame ceremony that pushed the game's start back to 7:55 p.m. ... Closer Mariano Rivera threw off a mound Wednesday for the second day in a row. Manager Joe Torre said Rivera "feels really, really good right now.'' Torre said he hopes to have Rivera, on the DL since Aug. 19, back for the last 10 days of the regular season. ... The Yankees wore inch-thick black armbands on their left sleeves. ... The Yankees' sweep of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday means they have won or tied 19 of their last 21 series, since losing two of three at Baltimore June 25-27. Two days after the last game of that series, the Yankees took sole possession of first place in the AL East and held onto it ever since.

TAMPA BAY: U.S. Army General Tommy Franks spoke before the game as part of a program marking the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedies. "As we remember, and we won't forget, we deserve to be proud of those who serve under the flag,'' Franks said. "And all those who salute the flag. And all those who wave the flag. You represent the support that all of us need to finish the job. And we will finish the job.'' ... Franks was scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first, but instead placed the ball on the pitching rubber next to a red rose in recognition of those who were killed one year ago. ... Manager Hal McRae said baseball was right to play games on Wednesday. "We can't forget,'' McRae said. "We have to move on.'' ... The Devil Rays agreed to terms on a contract with SS B.J. Upton, who was taken second overall in this year's amateur draft. He will join the team's Florida Instructional League team on Tuesday. ... Minor league RHP Delvin James, who was shot in the left shoulder Sept. 2 at a Raleigh N.C., restaurant, picked up the save in Game 1 of the International League finals for Durham against Buffalo. The Devil Rays earlier this month said James would not pitch again this season for precautionary reasons.

CLEVELAND: OF Matt Lawton was in Cincinnati on Wednesday, having his left shoulder evaluated, which has bothered him all season. He hasn't played since last weekend's series in Chicago. ... MRI results were negative for OF Milton Bradley, who is day to day with a strained left oblique muscle. ... C Einar Diaz could come off the disabled list for the weekend series against Minnesota. ... RHP Jason Phillips underwent successful arthroscopic surgery Wednesday. He had a bone spur removed from his right elbow and will begin a throwing program in six to eight weeks. ... The Indians have used 54 players this year, one shy of the club record of 55 in 2000. ... The Indians were mathematically eliminated from contention Tuesday, their earliest exit since 1993.
Tigers-Twins
MINNESOTA: The Twins' instructional league team begins play Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla. The 38-man roster includes Minnesota's first-round draft pick, outfielder Denard Span. ... The Edmonton Trappers, the Twins' Triple-A affiliate, lost Game 1 of the PCL championship series to Salt Lake, 7-5. The Twins are waiting for the end of the series before calling up some of their minor league prospects. ... SS Cristian Guzman has been bothered by a sore shoulder and other various ailments this year, but he's finally starting to heat up. He's hitting .303 in the second half. The Twins have tried to get Guzman, one of the league's fastest runners, to slide feet first. "We talk over and over again about getting him to slide on his butt,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Every time he dives in head first, he gets hurt.'' ... Guzman, the major league leader in triples the last two seasons, got his sixth three-base hit Tuesday night. That tied him with catcher A.J. Pierzynski. "There's a war going on,'' Gardenhire said. Guzman said he wouldn't mind if his slower teammate beat him in that category. "I think he'll be happy,'' Guzman said.

TEXAS: During their major-league record streak of 27 straight games with a homer that ended Tuesday night, the Rangers got 55 homers from 11 players. Alex Rodriguez hit 16 homers during the four-week span that began Aug. 11, while Rafael Palmeiro had 10 and Herbert Perry nine. The Rangers are the first team ever with two streaks of 20 or more games in the same season, having homered in 21 straight games, the previous club record, from June 24-July 18. Tuesday night was also the first time since May 12 -- a stretch of 50 games -- that there wasn't a homer hit. ... On Wednesday, rookie RHP Colby Lewis became the 11th pitcher to start a game for Texas this season. Lewis, the team's top pick in the June 1999 draft, made his first major league start. He made 11 relief appearances in two previous stints with the Rangers this season.
Athletics-Angels
ANAHEIM: 3B Troy Glaus didn't start for the second straight game because of a jammed left ring finger and remains day to day, manager Mike Scioscia said. Glaus was injured sliding headfirst into second base Monday night. ... OF Tim Salmon, who recently missed 18 games after being hit on the left hand by a pitch, was hit in the same area by Mike Fyhrie on Tuesday night and wasn't in the lineup Wednesday, but said his hand is fine. "I don't know why I'm out, ask (Scioscia),'' Salmon said. "Of course I'd like to be in there, but this time of the year you don't want to make waves. I'd be willing to bet if I was swinging the bat well, I'd be in the lineup every day.'' Scioscia said it was simply a night off for Salmon. "We're going to be facing a lot of left-handers, he's going to play a lot of baseball this weekend,'' Scioscia said. ... Closer Troy Percival said he believes baseball avoided a black eye by avoiding a work stoppage and playing as scheduled on the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks. "We definitely wanted to be playing September 11th,'' he said. "It would just have been a travesty to not be playing today. In my mind, it would have done irreparable damage to baseball.''

KANSAS CITY: The Royals are just 22-49 on the road despite a decent road ERA of 4.63. In one-run games on the road, they're 6-17. ... If Mike Sweeney wins the batting title, he would be just the third Royal to do so. George Brett did it in 1976, '80 and '90 while Willie Wilson captured a title in 1982. Sweeney entered the day three points ahead of New York's Bernie Williams.

CINCINNATI: Workers crowded both available levels and adjoining stairwells of the neighboring Great American Ball Park construction site as the Reds and Pirates took part in pregame ceremonies at Cinergy Field commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. ... A letter from President Bush was read by the public-address announcer and Andy Moskal, 14, the son of a victim of the attacks on the World Trade Center, threw a ceremonial first pitch to Reds shortstop and team captain Barry Larkin. Moskal's father, William, was an official with Marsh USA Inc. and a member of the safety team at the Great American Ball Park construction site. Lorraine Moskal, Andy's mother and William's wife, also was on hand. ... The full complements of both teams stood with caps off in front of their dugouts as military officers from the Army, Navy, Marines and National Guard marched in through the outfield wall and lined up along the warning track and local police, fire and dispatch officers and members of the American Red Cross marched out from behind the plate and lined up along the basepaths. As they entered, a bagpipe-and-drum corps from the Hamilton County sheriff's department played religious and patriotic songs behind second base.

PHILADELPHIA: Before Placido Polanco hit a three-run homer in the first inning Wednesday night, 21 of the Phillies' previous 28 homers were solo shots. ... LF Pat Burrell has hit in 13 of 14 games. ... Marlon Anderson snapped an 0-for-22 slump with a triple in the fourth inning. ... C Johnny Estrada started his first game with the Phillies this season. He was the team's regular starter last year after Mike Lieberthal had a season-ending knee injury.

ATLANTA: In the opener, 1B Matt Franco flied out to center in his first at-bat, then walked three straight times. ... 3B Vinny Castilla went 1-for-4 in the opener, stretching his career-long homerless streak to 255 at-bats. He last homered June 11 at Minnesota. Mark DeRosa, who went 4-for-5 in Game 1, took Castilla's spot at third base and batted s.. RHP John Smoltz picked up his 50th save in the first game, becoming the fastest pitcher to reach that mark. He did it in the Braves' 143rd game; Bobby Thigpen and Dennis Eckersley both did in 145 games.

CHICAGO: When INF Mark Bellhorn began this season, his goal was to be more consistent at the plate, not become a power hitter. But Bellhorn hit his 27th home run Wednesday, giving him 20 more than he'd had in his previous four major league seasons. ... "The home runs have just come,'' he said. "I'm not really trying to hit them.'' ... Cubs interim manager Bruce Kimm hopes to know Thursday whether RHP Matt Clement can make his scheduled start Saturday. Clement had to leave Monday night's game in the fifth inning with back spasms. ... Though Kimm wants to see Fred McGriff reach two significant milestones, he also knows he needs to get rookie Hee Seop Choi some playing time. McGriff, who is unlikely to return next year, needs two more RBI for 1,500 in his career. He needs two home runs to become the first player with 30-homer seasons for five different teams. "I really want him to get to that goal, but there's no doubt Choi needs to get his at-bats,'' Kimm said. "He can't just wait and wait and wait.'' ... The Cubs turned a season-high four double plays. ... The victory gave the Cubs their second straight series win at home.

Cardinals-Brewers
MILWAUKEE: The Brewers received LHP Mike Matthews, 28, from St. Louis Wednesday as the player to be named in the trade that sent Jamey Wright to the Cardinals. Matthews initially will pitch out of the bullpen, but probably will make a start or two before the season ends. Matthews always has wanted to start, but made 43 appearances, all in relief, for the Cardinals this season. "You can't look at it as going from first to worst because I have a chance to pitch here,'' he said. Both Matthews and Wright are free agents at the end of the season. ... The Brewers have corrected a flaw in SS Bill Hall's throwing motion. Hall, the Brewers 2001 minor league player of the year, made 41 errors at Triple-A Indianapolis this year. He was called up to the Brewers on Sept. 2.
Padres-Diamondbacks
ARIZONA: With both Curt Schilling (23-5) and Randy Johnson (21-5) having career years, manager Bob Brenly is grateful he doesn't have a Cy Young Award vote. "It's like having twin daughters, and they're both up for homecoming queen,'' Brenly said. ... RF David Dellucci, who sustained a concussion when he was hit by a throw from San Diego C Wiki Gonzalez in the fifth inning Tuesday night, was not in the lineup for this game, but was available. He said the headaches and nausea subsided overnight. ... 1B Mark Grace made his first start since Aug. 24 and hit second in the order for the first time this year. "He's a guy that's capable of hitting everywhere but leadoff, and we even tried that two years ago in the spring,'' Brenly said. Grace was 5-for-9 against Padres starter Adam Eaton. ... The Diamondbacks snapped a stretch of four straight series losses by taking the first two against San Diego. Arizona had not lost four series in a row since the 1998 expansion season.

SAN FRANCISCO: Tom Goodwin started in right field for regular Reggie Sanders because manager Dusty Baker thought Goodwin would do better against Hideo Nomo, who is 10-3 in 15 career starts against San Francisco. Goodwin came in hitting .333 in his career (3-for-9) against Nomo, while Sanders was just 3-for-17 (.176). Goodwin was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, and also scored a run, but he didn't get much help. ... Barry Bonds drew his major league-leading 167th walk and hit an RBI double in the ninth off Eric Gagne. ... RHP Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for the Giants in his first major league appearance in exactly two years. ... Before the game, there was a tribute on the big screen on the center-field scoreboard reading ''9.11.01 We will never forget'' with a series of black-and-white photos from the events of one year ago. "We're here to play baseball, we're here to entertain and we're here to hopefully help people heal,'' Baker said. Bagpipes skirled, flags were at half-staff, with a flag of the Fire Department of New York included, and players walked in a line and surrounded the infield dirt to salute a huge flag that covered nearly the entire outfield. It was held by police officers and firefighters. "America The Beautiful'' played as the flag was unveiled. In place of a ceremonial first pitch, the ball was placed on the mound by John Beaven, who lost his father in the attacks. Families of eight Bay Area residents who lost their lives on Sept. 11 were present and stood in the infield. Their names were listed on the big screen. Members of the San Francisco Fire Department tossed wreaths of white flowers into McCovey Cove from a fireboat outside the park. White doves were released as everyone joined together to sing the national anthem, which concluded the emotional pregame tribute. |
