"In the American League the bench coach is not a big a deal as in the National League. Right now I'm leaning toward just keeping the same staff as I have,'' Tosca said.

More striking, Castilla had gone a career-high 233 at-bats since his last homer on June 11. "He knows what the problem is, but he doesn't know how to correct it,'' said Sheffield, who believes a thicker bat will help keep Castilla from swinging at so many pitches outside the strike zone. Castilla said the bat didn't feel comfortable, but his teammate said that's OK. "It's going to make him think about other things,'' Sheffield said. Using the new bats, Castilla had two hits Monday night, including a double off the wall. Asked if he planned to keep using Sheffield's bats, Castilla replied, "Believe it.
