"I've said time and time again he's not a center fielder. He's an extra guy. But, heck, he keeps going out and getting it done. He's certainly made the most of his opportunity. You've got to root for a guy like that. He's certainly persevered over the years. He's taken the bull by the horns and run with it.'' ... The Pirates have won the opening game in eight of nine series since the All-Star break, including a 3-1 victory Tuesday at Los Angeles that knocked the Dodgers out of lead in the wild card race. Without Lieber, the Cubs' staff consists of Kerry Wood's surgically repaired arm, veteran retread Matt Clement and rookies Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano and Steve Smyth. ... "They've got a lot of talent over there.'' ... The Cubs entered Wednesday night's game two shy of the team record for homers in consecutive games. Fred McGriff's three-run homer on Tuesday night extended the streak to 15 games. San Francisco and Chicago are 1-2 in the NL in homers. San Francisco: Whether or not Barry Bonds hit his 600th homer on Wednesday night, Baker thought he would probably give his slugger a day off Thursday. Bonds is visibly hampered by a torn hamstring that limits his mobility in the outfield. "It'll depend on how he comes out of (Wednesday night), how much strain he puts on it, and bottom line, it's up to him,'' Baker said. ... San Francisco won just 13 of its first 25 games after the break this season, yet still slipped into the wild card lead. ... Perez injured his shoulder with a headfirst slide into first base in the seventh inning on Tuesday night. Perez, who had three singles, left the game before he threw a warmup pitch to start the eighth. Perez was examined by team doctor Jan Fronek on Wednesday, but the results of the examination were not yet known. ... LHP Kevin Walker will be activated on Friday when the Padres begin a 10-game road trip with three in Cincinnati, according to Bochy. Walker passed his final rehab test Tuesday night when he pitched in back-to-back games for the first time since undergoing ``Tommy John'' surgery. Walker, 25, will return to the majors exactly one year and one week after he underwent the surgery on his left elbow. ... RHP Bobby J. Jones and Bobby M. Jones appeared in a game together Tuesday night for the first time since Sept. 28, 2000 when they were teammates with the New York Mets. Bobby J.
