SUNDAY'S TIDBITS
|
Line of the Day
Carols Lee Grand slam plus three-run homer equal career day for Lee. |
|
Hero of the day
Slugger Mo Vaughn belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees.
Goat of the day
Jays reliever Brandon Lyon failed to get an out when he took over in the sixth, giving up four straight hits and three earned runs in a loss to the Expos.
Injury report
Atlanta SS Rafael Furcal left the game after getting hit in the elbow by a pitch in the third inning. X-rays were negative, and the Braves said he was day-to-day.
Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. was out of the lineup for the eighth straight game since straining his right hamstring. He pinch-hit in the fifth and flied out.
Cardinals 1B Tino Martinez, who has soreness in his shoulder, didn't start but entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth. His is expected to start Tuesday.
Tigers DH Dmitri Young was out of the lineup again because of an aggravated hernia.
Yankees SS Derek Jeter left in the eighth with a bone bruise on his
left knee and was replaced by Enrique Wilson. Jeter,
who went 2-for-4, fouled a pitch off his knee in the first inning.
Streak of the day Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo extended his hitting streak to 31 games, matching the longest in the majors since 1987.
Stat of the day Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace drove in three runs on a homer and his 500th career double in a victory over the Tigers. Grace is the third active player with 500 doubles, trailing Rafael Palmeiro (505) and Rickey Henderson (507).
The last word "I'm not the ace, I'll tell you that right now. This is only 2½ months. To be considered an ace, you've got to do this for years. I'm the third guy in line, and I just try to win games.'' -- Red Sox right-hander and 11-game winner Derek Lowe, who's the No. 3 starter behind Pedro Martinez and John Burkett.

INTERLEAGUE
White Sox at Cubs
Chicago White Sox: Carlos Lee's seven RBI were the most for the White
Sox since Charles Johnson had seven on Sept. 2, 2000. ... Frank
Thomas was on the bench for all three games at Wrigley Field. The
DH isn't used at NL parks, and while Thomas has played first in
past interleague series, manager Jerry Manuel decided to go with
Paul Konerko instead. "You can't make a stink about it,'' the
two-time MVP said. "I haven't played first. Paul's had the best
half of his major league life. You can't take that away from him. I
respect the situation.'' ... Keith Foulke, who lost his closer's
job earlier in the week, finally had a positive outing Sunday. He
worked 2 2-3 innings, his longest of the season, striking out one
and walking one to get his first victory. "If he pitches like
that, I don't think he'll be a long man much longer,'' Cubs manager
Don Baylor said. ... 2B Ray Durham left the game in the bottom of
the fifth inning. "He was hobbling a little bit. He did something
before the game. The trainers got him loose, but he was hobbling
later,'' Manuel said. ... Not that the crosstown series needs any
extra hype, but the White Sox coaches fired their players up with
some pregame speeches. "We're the men, we're the warriors,' kind
of stuff,'' Manuel said.
Chicago Cubs: Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said he'll have to look at
tapes to see if he can pick out what Kerry Wood was doing wrong
Sunday. Wood gave up a career-high eight runs, but Rothschild said
he didn't see any obvious problems. "Today was just a bad start
for him,'' Rothschild said. ... Wood said he didn't have any
problems in the bullpen before the game, but he just couldn't get
comfortable once he got to the mound. "It's frustrating, because I
know how I can throw the ball,'' Wood said. "I was trying to do
just about everything I could. I just couldn't find a zone.'' ...
The Cubs offense is finally coming alive, scoring eight, seven and
seven runs against the White Sox. Todd Hundley had a big series,
hitting three homers, and Moises Alou extended his hitting streak
to 10 games. "I'd like our offense to stay on a roll,'' manager
Don Baylor said. "This series is pretty easy to get up for because
it's the White Sox. I just don't want to see these guys fall
back.'' The Cubs begin a three-game series with the Texas Rangers
on Tuesday. ... Alex Gonzalez's homer was his first since May 6.
... Alou's 10-game hitting streak is the eighth double-digit run of
his career.
Yankees at Mets
New York Yankees: Neither team has swept a Subway Series since
interleague play began in 1997. ... The teams did not take batting
practice on the field before the game because the tarp was out in
anticipation of rain. The Yankees have not taken BP on the field
since Tuesday, but SS Derek Jeter said that affects defense more
than offense. "You can always hit in the cage, but you can't
really take groundballs inside,'' Jeter said, adding that he does
not like the Shea Stadium infield. "It's not good. It gets a
little choppy.'' ... Jeter thinks the Mets-Yankees rivalry has lost
a little bit of its original luster. "We play them every year
now,'' he said. "The fans still get into it, but I don't think
it's like it was.'' ... Shane Spencer got the start in right field
even against RHP Pedro Astacio. With rookie OF Juan Rivera injured,
Yankees manager Joe Torre said Spencer, who lost his everyday job
in right field twice earlier this season, has another chance to
nail down the regular role. "That's what I'm looking for. When the
season started, that's what I wanted to happen,'' Torre said. ...
RHP Orlando Hernandez, on the DL with a strained upper back, is
scheduled to pitch in a simulated game Monday in Tampa, Fla. ...
Torre was happy to get the focus back on baseball after all the
Roger Clemens beanball drama Saturday. "It's still the Mets and
it's still nuts, but I'm glad yesterday is over, no question,'' he
said.
New York Mets: RHP Grant Roberts, on the 15-day disabled list with a
rotator cuff strain, is expected to begin throwing again Monday.
... A security guard retrieved the ball LHP Shawn Estes hit for a
home run off Roger Clemens on Saturday and suggested Estes have
Clemens sign it. "I don't think he would appreciate that,'' Estes
said. ... Former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda stopped by and
chatted with Mets skipper Bobby Valentine before the game. They are
close friends. ... Actor Tim Robbins threw out the first pitch. ...
Former Mets 2B Wally Backman, now managing at Double-A Birmingham
in the White Sox system, found himself drawn to the feuding this
weekend at Shea Stadium. "I think about all the scuffles and
brawls and fights we had when I was there. I think it would've been
fun to play the Yankees back then. I'm sure we would've had
something,'' he said. Backman, who guided Birmingham to the
first-half title in the West Division of the Southern League, can
still be as fiery as he was when he played for the 1986 World
Series champions. He was ejected for arguing during Sunday's game
between the Barons and Mobile, the second time he's been tossed
this season.
Royals at Cardinals
Kansas City: RHP Shawn Sedlack makes his major league debut on
Tuesday night in Montreal. Sedlack, 24, was the Royals' 14th-round
draft pick in 1998. ... Alexis Gomez, who started in right field
and batted leadoff, was the 37th player used by the Royals this
year. Last year they used 44. Gomez had a bunt single in the sixth
for his first career hit. ... The Royals batted .189 in the
Cardinals' three-game sweep, totaling four runs. ... The Royals are
39-55 in interleague play overall and their only winning record is
9-8 against the Pirates. ... Neifi Perez was 3-for-24 (.125)
against the Cardinals, although he had an RBI single Sunday. ...
Michael Tucker is 5-for-29 (.172) since May 31 with no RBI.
St. Louis: All three starting pitchers had a hit and an RBI in
the sweep over the Royals. Matt Morris was 1-for-2 Friday, Jason
Simontacchi was 2-for-3 Saturday and Woody Williams was 1-for-1
with a sacrifice fly, sacrifice bunt and a run scored Sunday. ...
RHP Andy Benes' first rehab start with Triple-A Memphis was rained
out Saturday. Benes, who has an arthritic right knee, hasn't
pitched since April 15. He didn't report for extended spring
training last month but since has reconsidered attempting to resume
his career. "All he's got to do is be better than one of the five
guys we have here,'' manager Tony La Russa said. ... La Russa left
after the game for his annual golf tournament to benefit his Animal
Rescue Foundation on Monday in the San Francisco bay area. ... Eli
Marrero, who stole second on the back end of a double steal in the
sixth again stole second in the eighth, has not been caught in nine
attempts this season.
Rangers at Astros
Texas: Rafael Palmeiro's fifth inning double Saturday against
Houston was his 1,000th career extra-base hit, making him the 25th
player in major league history to accomplish the milestone. ...
Alex Rodriguez sprained his left ankle in the seventh inning
Saturday and was out of the lineup Sunday, breaking a streak of 291
consecutive starts dating back to July 23, 2000. He is listed as
day-to-day.
Houston: Houston's 4-0 victory over Texas on Saturday snapped a
five game interleague losing streak. ... Wade Miller hasn't walked
a batter in his past 14 innings, while striking out 15. In Miller's
four starts since returning from the DL on May 29. The Astros are
unbeaten and Miller is 2-0 with a 3.13 ERA.
Athletics at Giants
Oakland: The A's won two of the first three games of their
longest road trip of the season in San Francisco. The trip, which
includes 13 games in 14 days, takes Oakland to Pittsburgh,
Cincinnati and Seattle in the coming weeks. The A's team batting
average is nearly 40 points lower on the road, compared to their
.275 mark at the Coliseum. ... Oakland's visit to Pittsburgh is a
homecoming for manager Art Howe and bench coach Ken Macha. Both
members of the A's brain trust are from the Pittsburgh area, and
both played for the Pirates. Macha also attended the University of
Pittsburgh. "We'll see a lot of people we didn't know that we
knew, that's for sure,'' Howe said. ... Howe hasn't decided whether
to skip rookie Aaron Harang's next spot in the rotation, which
would be Friday at Cincinnati. With an off-day Monday, red-hot
Barry Zito would be available to pitch on his normal rest that day.
Harang is 2-2 in four starts since joining the club, but he allowed
two homers to Reggie Sanders in the A's 6-2 loss on Saturday. ...
Oakland has won 16 of its last 18 interleague games, including
eight of nine this season.
San Francisco: Manager Dusty Baker has complained about the
disparities of interleague play that forced his team to play the
tough Athletics while division rival Arizona played host to
Detroit. But interleague play will be much more kind for San
Francisco this week, when lowly Tampa Bay and sub-.500 Baltimore
visit Pacific Bell Park. ... The Giants have won eight of their
last 13 games after Sunday's loss to Oakland. Those five losses
came by a total of six runs. "It's hard not to let it be
discouraging, but we've got to look at the positives,'' Reggie
Sanders said. "Nobody has blown us out for two weeks.'' ... David
Bell made his eighth career start at first base. The Giants'
everyday third baseman moved across the diamond when Damon Minor
left the team to be with his wife, Allison, who's expecting the
couple's first child. Bell has appeared at first base just 15 times
in his career, but he didn't have any fielding misadventures.
Red Sox at Braves
Boston: The Red Sox avoided losing three straight with Sunday's
6-1 victory by Derek Lowe. "Whenever we've had a two-game skid,
we've seemed to come up with a pitcher that has a good ballgame,''
manager Grady Little said. "We have a resilient team, a team
that's confident with what they are able to on the baseball
field.'' ... RHP Derek Lowe, who got his AL-leading 11th victory
Sunday, got his first career hit in the third inning. He singled
sharply up the middle off Tom Glavine, his first hit in 10 career
at-bats. But C Jason Varitek wasn't convinced. "I told him not to
quit his day job,'' he said. "He got a changeup that kind of went
with his bat speed.'' ... 3B Shea Hillenbrand made two nice plays,
diving to backhand a grounder by Gary Sheffield and charging to
barehand a dribbler by Wes Helms.
Atlanta: 1B Matt Franco got his second start in three games and
went 2-for-4 with an RBI to raise his batting average to .364. He
got two of the three hits off Derek Lowe that left the infield.
"He's got an unbelievable sinker,'' Franco said. "He's one of
those guys that you can't, even if you get ahead in the count, you
can't really look to drive the ball off of him.'' ... CF Andruw
Jones had an infield hit in the second to get his average up to
.302, then struck out three straight times to fall back to .298.
... Wes Helms got the start at third in place of Vinny Castilla,
who strained his right hamstring Saturday night. Castilla is
day-to-day.
Blue Jays at Expos
Toronto: LF Shannon Stewart homered on Javier Vazquez's second
pitch of the game as the Blue Jays got out to a quick three-run
lead against the Expos ace in the first. Stewart has 13 career
homers leading off a game, including three this season. ... RHP
Steve Parris made his first start since last July 23, allowing five
hits and two runs in five innings. Parris, who had shoulder surgery
last Sept. 25, threw 44 of his 76 pitches for strikes. ... Toronto
lost its fifth in a row after winning 10 of 11, including a pair of
five-game winning streaks. ... The Blue Jays have an off-day Monday
before continuing their season-high 12-game road trip in Los
Angeles on Tuesday. Toronto will also play in Arizona and Tampa Bay
before completing their interleague schedule with a three-game
rematch against Montreal at SkyDome from June 28-30.
Montreal: Each team's leadoff hitters homered to begin the game
as CF Brad Wilkerson and 2B Jose Vidro hit back-to-back homers off
Parris to lead off the bottom half of the first. The last time both
leadoff hitters homered to begin a major league game was on Aug. 1,
when Texas' Michael Young and the New York Yankees' Chuck Knoblauch
each hit leadoff homers. ... A Rusty Staub bobblehead promotion
helped draw 15,425 -- the fourth-largest Olympic Stadium crowd this
season -- for Sunday's series finale. A likeness of Staub, the
franchise's first star, was given to the first 5,000 fans to enter
the stadium. Staub, who hit 29 homers in 1969 -- the team's
inaugural season -- and 30 the following the season, was the Expos'
lone representative at the All-Star game from 1969-71. ... Montreal
extended its winning streak to four. The Expos have won 22 of 33
home games this season, including 12 of their last 15.
Twins at Brewers
Minnesota: Corey Koskie is hitting .189 (14-74) since returning
from the DL on May 25, but hit a go-ahead homer Sunday against the
Brewers. ... Eddie Guardardo has converted 20 of 22 saves to lead
the AL. ... David Ortiz, who started the season as the Twins
cleanup hitter, only received six plate appearances in Minnesota's
last six games before Sunday. But he started Sunday and hit a
three-run double in the first inning. ... The Twins have four
outfielders, Jacque Jones, Torii Hunter, Bobby Kielty and Dustan
Mohr, hitting over .300. ... Minnesota is 30-18 against
right-handed starters and 9-12 against left-handers.
Milwaukee: Ruben Quevedo gave up four runs in the first inning
Sunday against the Twins. He also gave up four runs in his last
start June 10 against the A's. ... CF Alex Sanchez returned to the
starting lineup for the first time in five games since suffering a
strained hamstring. He had been limited to pinch-hitting duty, and
went 1-for-5 Sunday. ... RHP Nelson Figueroa has been removed from
the rotation, and is being replaced by Jose Cabrera. Figueroa had a
10.13 ERA in four starts since returning from the DL on May 21. He
pitched in relief Sunday and took the loss... RHP Paul Rigdon will
undergo arthroscopic surgery Tuesday on his right shoulder. Rigdon
had been expected to vie for a job in the Brewers starting rotation
this year, but has missed the season with a strained shoulder. ...
Milwaukee has been outscored 59-34 in the first inning this season.
Tigers at Diamondbacks
Detroit: Tigers' Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell threw
out the first pitch on Sunday, with Arizona manager Bob Brenly
catching. ... OF Robert Fick's hitting was good when he got to
Arizona, and it's gotten better. He went 3-for-4 in the first two
games of the series -- mostly against Curt Schilling and Randy
Johnson -- to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. ... Dmitri
Young was out of the lineup for the second day in a row because of
soreness from a hernia. He struck out in a pinch-hit appearance in
Saturday's 3-1 loss. ... Over the last five games, Tigers starters
are 3-0 with a 2.17 ERA. ... Detroit batters struck out 14 times in
each of the first two games against Arizona. ... The Tigers have
150 walks, by far the fewest in the majors.
Arizona: Bobby Cox of Atlanta and Tony La Russa of St. Louis
have turned down Arizona manager Bob Brenly's invitation to coach
in the All-Star game. Both told Brenly they already had family
commitments. ... 3B Craig Counsell got a rare day off Sunday.
Counsell had played in all 67 games, as have OF Luis Gonzalez and
SS Tony Womack. ... RHP Todd Stottlemyre pitched two scoreless
innings and earned a save in a rehab appearance with Triple-A
Tucson on Friday. Stottlemyre threw 27 pitches, 17 for strikes.
Barring any setback, he and RHP Matt Mantei are expected to join
the Diamondbacks for their series at Cleveland June 28-30. ... In
four games since being called up from Tucson, 2B Alex Cintron is
7-for-11 with three doubles and four runs scored.
Mariners at Padres
Seattle: The Mariners stranded 33 runners in the three-game
series against the Padres, leaving manager Lou Piniella in a foul
mood after Sunday's 5-3 loss. "I say the same things every night.
I get tired of it. I really do,'' Piniella said. "So why ask? Go
ask the players. Don't ask me anymore. That's all I got.'' With
that, his postgame interview session was over. ... John Olerud went
0-for-3 with a walk to snap his season-high 16-game hitting streak.
San Diego: Ryan Klesko singled each of his first three at-bats
and finished 3-for-4. On Saturday night, his 56-game streak of
reaching base safely via hit, walk or hit by pitch was snapped when
he went 0-for-4. ... Since 1997, the Padres have won three season
series against Seattle, tied two and lost one. ... 20-year-old LHP
Oliver Perez won his big league debut by allowing just two runs and
four hits in five innings. He became San Diego's first rookie lefty
to win since Heath Murray on June 2, 1997, at Atlanta.
Devil Rays at Marlins
Tampa Bay: Tampa Bay starters have an ERA of 2.50 over the past
five games. ... Tampa Bay improved to 10-23 on the road. ... Greg
Vaughn went 0-for-1 with two walks against Michael Tejera and is
4-for-45 (.088) against lefties. ... The Devil Rays hiked their
batting average on the road to .213.
Florida: Andy Fox went 0-for-2 against Wilson Alvarez and is
5-for-41 (.122) against left-handers. ... Florida hit .202 in three
games against Tampa Bay.
Orioles at Phillies
Baltimore: INF Jose Leon's contract was purchased from Triple-A
Rochester on Saturday when Jeff Conine went on the DL. Leon joined
the Orioles organization on July 31, 2000, when he was acquired in
a trade with St. Louis for Will Clark. Leon was hitting .300 with
eight homers and 35 RBI in 67 games for Rochester this spring. ...
The Orioles are 5-4 against the NL. ... SS Mike Bordick ended a
2-for-20 slump with a double in the eighth inning. ... 2B Brian
Roberts is hitting .297 (14-for-47) with seven runs in his last 16
games. ... C Geronimo Gil is hitting .155 (9-for-58) in his last 16
games. ... The Orioles bullpen is 15-10. The relievers went 17-27
last season.
Philadelphia: The Phillies Father's Day honoree was Earl
Michaels, father of OF Jason Michaels. Players submitted their
fathers' names and a random drawing was held to select the winner.
Earl, his wife Lynne and daughter Andrea, were flown to
Philadelphia by the team from Tampa. ... OF Jeremy Giambi has
reached base safely in 15 of 17 games since being acquired by the
Phillies. ... C Mike Lieberthal is in a 3-for-28 slump. ... The
Phillies will play host to the Chicago White Sox for a series
starting on Monday. Oddly, the White Sox will have more games at
Veterans Stadium than the Chicago Cubs, who only play two games.
... The Phillies are 6-3 in interleague play. They went 7-11 last
season. The team's best interleague record came in 1997 with an
11-7 mark.
Indians at Rockies
Cleveland: Input from trainer Paul Spicuzza persuaded manager
Charlie Manuel's decision to put 2B Ricky Gutierrez on the 15-day
DL. "I made the decision last night after Paul told me he thought
Ricky's injury was a little bit worse than Ricky thought,'' Manuel
said. "Paul thought Ricky was going to be out for anywhere from
five days to a week.'' ... Gutierrez, who lives in Miami, will
remain with the team for the remainder of the road trip. ... The
Indians recalled utility player Jolbert Cabrera from Triple-A
Buffalo to take Gutierrez's place. "I'll use him in the infield,
the outfield, every where,'' Manuel said. "I will use him at first
base, all over the place.'' Cabrera was in right field for Sunday's
game after arriving at the ballpark at noon. ... Manuel returns to
Miami with bad memories of the 1997 World Series, which the Indians
lost to the Florida Marlins. "I remember Game 7, a game we led and
ended up losing,'' Manuel said. "That was a game we didn't
execute, didn't advance runners when we needed to add to our
lead.'' ... OF Ellis Burks didn't play Sunday to rest his sore
knees. Manuel said he planned to play Burks at least two games in
Florida and possibly not at all in Montreal. "I have to rest his
knees,'' Manuel said. "And I don't want to play him too much in
Montreal because of the turf.''
Colorado: Manager Clint Hurdle said there's more to 2B Jose
Ortiz's trip to the 15-day DL than his injured hamstring. "He
understands he is not playing well, not producing the way he needs
to produce,'' Hurdle said. "Why not use this opportunity to get
100 percent healthy from both sides of the ball, to show the range
we've seen before, to see the first step quickness and do some of
the things hitting like driving the baseball.'' ... Replacement
Brent Butler was in the lineup Sunday to face Cleveland's Bartolo
Colon. "Look at the rotations that he will be facing: only Colon,
and then Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens,'' Hurdle
said. "Spring break.'' Hurdle said Butler will the majority of the
playing time at second base with Terry Shumpert getting the
remainder of the starts while Ortiz is out. ... 3B Todd Zeile was
given the day off to get Greg Norton into the lineup. "I had to
get Norton some at-bats,'' Hurdle said. "Poor Zeile. He gets here
real early, early enough to get a parking space and I sit him.''
... Hurdle said the juices would be flowing for the upcoming series
with the New York Yankees. "Where I developed the lather was when
I played for Kansas City. That was war,'' Hurdle said. "They used
to call us the cowboys, the little team from out West that was
scared of the Big Apple.''
Angels at Dodgers
Anaheim: The Angels lost two out of three from the Dodgers this
weekend and trail the all-time regular-season series 15-14. They
face an even bigger uphill battle in terms of popularity, and may
not be able to close the gap unless that get to that elusive first
World Series. "Off the field, I would say that their public
relations department has probably got an upper hand on ours, just
because of the history and the championships they've won and the
great teams they've had,'' 1B Scott Spiezio said. "But on the
field, I know we can compete with anybody -- and we've proven that.
I do feel that we can get to the World Series, but I know that it's
a long road. So we're basically taking it one day at a time and
hoping that we can change things around here, as far as public
perception, and show people that we can win.''
Los Angeles: The Dodgers play host to Toronto on Tuesday night
in the opener of a three-game series, which means Raul Mondesi
returns to Chavez Ravine for the first time since getting traded
for Shawn Green on Nov. 8, 1999. "Mondi was a player who the fans
liked to come watch -- because anytime they came to the game, Mondi
was going to do something exciting -- good or bad,'' said 1B Eric
Karros, who was Mondesi's teammate for seven seasons. "He's
definitely got a great arm. There was a time where he'd show it off
any time he could, and you didn't want to run on him at all. He
even has that tattoo, 'El Canon' on his right arm. Mondi's a guy
who's always played hard and is going to leave everything on the
field. I remember one night when he they had to carry him off on a
stretcher in San Diego -- and he was able to play the next day.''
... Father's Day took on added significance this year for manager
Jim Tracy, whose 18-year-old son Bryan was picked by the Dodgers in
the 21st round of the June 5 draft. The younger Tracy has yet to
decide whether to sign a contract or accept a scholarship to pitch
at UC Santa Barbara -- which would make him ineligible to go back
into the draft for two years. "I'm proud of him, and I think he's
proud of the fact that somebody thought enough of him to make him a
selection,'' said Tracy, one of four current managers whose son was
drafted this year.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pirates at Reds
Pittsburgh: LHP Jimmy Anderson came within an out of getting his
first career shutout in 78 starts. He had to settle for his third
complete game and a 5-1 victory over Cincinnati. Two of the three
complete games have come against the Reds. ... Anderson induced
three double plays and 15 groundball outs. "When he's aggressive,
he gets a lot of groundballs,'' catcher Keith Osik said. "If he
does that, he's going to be successful. We've constantly got to
stress to him how important it is to stay ahead of the hitters.''
... RF Craig Wilson led the Pirates during the weekend series,
going 7-for-12 while driving in eight of their 11 runs. He homered
in each of the three games, becoming the first Pirate to hit a
homer in three straight since Brian Giles did it in August 2000.
... Wilson has raised his average from .209 to .322 in the last 18
games. He has started each of the last eight games in right and
gone 15-for-33. "He's been there everyday for quite a while,''
manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He's earned the right to stay in
there. It's very pleasing to see the way he's been swinging the
bat.'' ... 2B Pokey Reese singled in his first at-bat, extending
his hitting streak to nine games (13-for-31). Fans booed the former
Red whenever he came to bat, and cheered when he was hit by a pitch
in the ninth from John Riedling, who was making his second
appearance since coming off the disabled list. ... 1B Kevin Young
hit a solo homer on his 33rd birthday.
Cincinnati: A woman sitting in the second row to the side of the
foul screen was grazed on the head by a foul in the eighth. Julie
Catron, 36, of suburban West Chester, was bleeding when she walked
up the aisle to get medical attention. She was taken to Good
Samaritan Hospital for stitches. ... LHP Bruce Chen made his first
appearance for the Reds, giving up two hits in 1 2-3 innings. The
Reds got Chen from Montreal on Friday for RHP Jim Brower. ... SS
Barry Larkin, who has a 10-game hitting streak, got a day of rest.
... CF Ken Griffey Jr. pinch hit and flied out in the fifth inning.
He has been out of the lineup for the last eight games after
pulling his right hamstring while running to first base. During
that time, he has pinch hit four times, getting a single and two
walks along with Sunday's flyout. The Reds are hoping to have him
back in the lineup Tuesday when Seattle visits for an interleague
series. ... Griffey's next hit will be No. 2,000. He'll become the
29th player to get at least 2,000 hits and 400 homers. Three active
players have reached those marks: Barry Bonds, Fred McGriff and
Rafael Palmeiro. ... The Reds are 22-9 against teams that currently
have losing records, 16-20 against the rest.
