Braves win before smallest-ever Turner Field crowd
GAME UPDATE | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ATLANTA (AP) – Greg Maddux deserved a win, didn't get it and said it didn't matter.

Greg Maddux finally gave up a run this season, but it was unearned as he sparkled again on Monday.

Maddux gave up his first run of the season -- it was unearned -- and the Atlanta Braves beat the Florida Marlins 4-3 Monday night on Rico Brogna's ninth-inning RBI single.

"Results is what it's all about," Maddux said. "It's about pitching, and I feel good about the way I pitched and we won."

Before the smallest crowd ever at Turner Field, Maddux allowed five hits in eight innings, struck out six and walked none and left with a 3-1 lead, which reliever John Rocker couldn't hold.

Maddux gave up a run in the fourth on Preston Wilson's two-out single, Paul Bako's passed ball and Mike Lowell's RBI single. That ended Maddux's consecutive scoreless innings streak at Turner Field at 35.

Maddux hasn't allowed an earned run in 20 innings this season and going back to last Sept. 2, he has allowed only four earned runs in his last 60 innings during the regular season, a 0.60 ERA.

"They're still the best in the East. Maddux was awesome," Florida's Cliff Floyd said.

Rocker (2-0) wasted a 3-1 lead in the ninth, giving up consecutive singles to Eric Owens and Floyd, throwing a run-scoring wild pitch and, following another passed ball by Bako, giving up an RBI groundout to Lowell.

Pinch-hitter B.J. Surhoff walked against Dan Miceli (0-2) leading off the bottom half, took second on Rafael Furcal's sacrifice bunt.

Dave Martinez walked and, with the crowd chanting "Ri-co! Ri-co! Ri-co!" Brogna hit the game-winner. He also had an RBI single in the first.

"Sure I heard them. I did. It was exciting," said Brogna, who went 3-for-4. "That's a motivating thing and I didn't want to let them down."

Andruw Jones homered for the Braves, who won consecutive games for the first time this season and evened their record at 7-7.

The game drew 24,015, just below the previous record low of 24,472 on Sunday.

Jones broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a solo homer off Brad Penny, and the Braves added an unearned run in the seventh. Brogna doubled, took third when right fielder Eric Owens bobbled the ball and came around on Chipper Jones' infield single.

"Maddux threw the ball better than I did," said Penny. "That pitch to Andruw Jones was a mistake. I didn't get it where I wanted to."

Game notes
Marlins closer Antonio Alfonseca celebrated his 29th birthday Monday. ... Florida's Charles Johnson had his eight-game hitting streak end. ... The Marlins and Braves have split their last 16 games. ... Braves 2B Quilvio Veras missed his third straight game. He jammed his right big toe while running the bases Friday.
