RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Jeff Suppan tossed a six-hitter for his seventh career complete game and Johnny Damon and Joe Randa had three hits apiece as the Kansas City Royals coasted to an 8-3 victory over the Anaheim Angels.

Suppan (9-9) retired the first nine batters he faced and struck out four en route to his second complete game of the season and first since defeating Boston on August 25. He is 7-3 since the All-Star break.

"This is the first time all year I threw the breaking ball well all game," Suppan said. "This is one of the things I have to improve on to make it an out pitch. I had to get back to doing things consistently."

Suppan lost his shutout bid in the sixth inning when Tim Salmon delivered a two-run double. He also yielded rookie Ben Molina's 13th home run in the seventh.

"Tonight was Suppan's night," Royals manager Tony Muser said. "His breaking ball is starting to become important. It will really help him next year. Tonight, he was crisp. The cool weather helped him."

Kansas City gave Suppan all the runs he needed by scoring five times in the third inning. Damon snapped a scoreless tie with an RBI infield hit and the Royals made it 2-0 on a double play before knocking out Anaheim starter Scott Schoeneweis (7-9) on run-scoring singles by Jermaine Dye, Randa and David McCarty.

"I've gotten out of jams all year long, I just didn't get out of this one," Schoeneweis said. "I'm just not making my pitches. I'm not a good pitcher right now. Until I learn to make my pitches on a consistent basis, I'm just going to (stink).

Randa's hit gave him a career-high 100 RBI. He is the third Royal to reach the century mark this season, joining Mike Sweeney (139) and Dye (115).

"It means something," Randa said. "You work hard to establish yourself and become a complete player. One hundred RBI is a sign of a productive hitter. The guys in front of me gave me the opportunity. Of course, I have to drive them in, but I give credit to those guys."

Anaheim tried to get back in the game in the fourth, putting runners at first and second with two out. But Dye made a nice running catch in foul territory on Garret Anderson's fly ball.

"Two plays made the difference -- Jermaine making that play down the line, then Quinn making the one on the other line," Suppan said. "They hit three balls I thought were hit out of the park but stayed in instead of Molina's."

Randa doubled and scored on rookie Mark Quinn's single in the fifth for a 6-0 advantage. Kansas City capped the scoring with two runs in the eighth and finished with 16 hits.

"We hit the ball back up the middle," Muser said. "We didn't try to overswing and hit the ball out of the ballpark."

Damon scored on Sweeney's single in the eighth inning, giving him a league-leading 129 runs. He is four shy of the team record set by Willie Wilson in 1980.

Schoeneweis surrendered five runs and seven hits with a walk and a hit batter in 2 2/3 innings. He is winless in his last three starts.

"The bottom line is I'm not winning and it's not how you win or how you lose, it's whether you won or lost," Schoeneweis said.

The Angels lost for the third time in four games to virtually fall out of the American League wild card race. They trail Oakland and Cleveland by 6 1/2 games with 10 to play.

"We're getting to a point where wins are becoming critical," Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said. "All we can do is play good baseball. That's all we can control."

The Royals have a chance to play spoiler again this weekend when they host Cleveland in a three-game series.

"We get Cleveland tomorrow and they are fighting for a wild card," Damon said. "We'd like to hurt their chances. We have to play our best baseball. We're looking forward to it."

Kansas City's Rey Sanchez extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the first inning.
