RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ The Pittsburgh Pirates finally had a reason to celebrate on Monday.

The Pirates scored four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 and end a nine-game losing streak.

The Pirates avoided becoming the first Pittsburgh team to lose 10 in a row since 1968.

``When you lose nine games, you want to celebrate,'' said Pirates manager Gene Lamont. ``It was good to get a win tonight.''

Adrian Brown, whose two-run double highlighted the Pirates' big inning, echoed Lamont.

``We've been losing so much, it felt great to get that hit,'' said Brown, who had his fourth multiple-RBI game in the last six outings.

``I've always thought of him as a guy that set the table but he's getting a lot of RBIs lately,'' Lamont said. ``He's proven to us that he's much more.''

Brown, who has an eight-game hitting streak, is 55-for-162 (.339) with 34 runs scored since coming off the disabled list in early August.

``I feel like I can do anything up there,'' Brown said. ``I'm real comfortable at the plate. It's been rough the whole year. We've been losing so much it felt good to get that hit.''

The Phillies were left to figure out how another game got away.

Vicente Padilla (4-7) squandered the Phillies' 4-2 advantage. Padilla, who is 0-4 with a 6.11 ERA in 12 games at Veterans Stadium. gave up three doubles in the eighth.

``He makes mistakes like young pitchers do,'' Phillies manager Terry Francona said. ``He left a ball hanging over the plate.''

Kevin Young reached first after a wild pitch on a third strike and scored on Warren Morris' double. Morris went to third on a double to center by Emil Brown. After pinch-hitter Brian Giles was intentionally walked, Adrian Brown's double scored Morris and Emil Brown. A squeeze bunt by John Wehner plated Giles.

Pirates reliever Rich Loiselle (1-3) pitched the eighth inning and struck out two. Mike Williams pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 25 opportunities.

Scott Rolen returned to the Phillies' lineup after leaving Friday night's game with the Florida Marlins due to stiffness in his back. Rolen hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his 24th homer of the season.

Phillies starter Kent Bottenfield reinjured his left ankle and pitched just one inning. Bottenfield missed a scheduled start last Monday against Montreal. He will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

``He threw a pitch and felt it give,'' Francona said of Bottenfield. ``He came to me after the inning and said he couldn't go.''

Notes: Philadelphia's Rob Ducey grounded out in the sixth inning for his 63rd pinch-hitting appearance of the season, the most in Phillies history. The previous record was 62 by Curt Ford in 1989. ... Ritchie's walk to Travis Lee in the third inning was the 634th walk allowed by the Pirates this season, setting a club record. The old record was set last season. ...Bobby Abreu's triple in the fifth was his 10th of the season, giving him double digits in doubles, triples and homers for the second straight year. He is the fifth Phillie to accomplish the feat in consecutive years, the last being Juan Samuel in 1984.
