Moyer wins 11th straight over Orioles

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

BALTIMORE (AP) -- They're scoring runs in bunches and getting efficient performances from both their starters and the bullpen.

Everything seems to be working for the Seattle Mariners, who refuse to loosen their tenuous grasp on first place in the AL West.

Jamie Moyer allowed three hits in seven innings to earn his 11th straight win against Baltimore, and Dan Wilson homered in a seven-run fifth inning as the Mariners cruised to a 14-0 victory Saturday night.

Alex Rodriguez and David Bell also homered for the Mariners, whose fourth straight win kept them two games ahead of second-place Oakland in the AL West. The A's remained one game back in the loss column by beating Tampa Bay 5-2.

Moyer (13-9) walked three and struck out three in winning his second straight start after an 0-6 stretch. The left-hander is 11-1 against his former team, his only loss coming on May 30, 1989, as a member of the Texas Rangers.

"There are teams you pitch well against and teams you don't pitch well against. There's hitters you pitch well against and hitters you don't pitch well against," Moyer said. "I don't know why. I can't explain it."

Moyer's stellar effort followed an effective outing by Aaron Sele, who also pitched seven solid innings Friday night in Seattle's 10-2 rout of the Orioles.

"We swung the bats good and got good pitching. That's a winning combination," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. "That's what we needed. When our veteran pitchers win with some consistency, it makes it easier for everyone on the staff."

It also makes it easy on the staff when the offense produces 10 and 14 runs on successive nights.

"It's a good hitter's ballpark and we've been swinging the bats well," Bell said. "It's nice to have a few games like that now and then. It takes some of the pressure off."

After Moyer left, relievers Rob Ramsay and Kevin Hodges completed the three-hitter. Seattle's bullpen has allowed runs in only seven of its last 21 games, compiling a 1.89 ERA in that span.

Melvin Mora had two hits for the Orioles (66-82), who are assured of a third straight losing season for the first time since 1986-88. Baltimore has yielded at least 10 runs in 28 games this year.

The Mariners led 3-0 before pulling away in the fifth after Mike Mussina retired the first two batters. Mussina (9-15) then gave up two straight hits before leaving with a strained right groin.

"He tried to give us his best shot. It just didn't work," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said.

It's been a lingering problem for Mussina, who said he might miss his next start, Friday night in Boston, if the injury persists.

"I'm concerned it's going to go out on me," he said. "I get an extra day (of rest) before my next start, and maybe that will give me time for it to clear up. If not, then maybe I skip that one and maybe pitch one more in the last homestand."

After Mussina left, Leslie Brea walked in a run, gave up an RBI single to Jay Buhner and a two-run double to Carlos Guillen before Wilson connected.

Bell capped Seattle's 16-hit barrage with a three-run shot in the ninth off Mike Trombley.

Seattle gave Moyer all the support he needed in the first inning when Rickey Henderson led off with a double and Rodriguez hit his 37th homer.

A double by Bell and an RBI single by Mike Cameron made it 3-0 in the third.

Game notes
Mussina fell to 11-4 lifetime against Seattle. He has yielded 28 homers compared to 16 last year. ... It was only the eighth time this season Baltimore failed to get an extra-base hit. ... The Mariners (6-3) clinched their first season series win over Baltimore since 1995. ... Seattle has won four straight series; the Orioles have won only one since the All-Star break.
