Hollandsworth homers twice for Colorado

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Despite throwing 140 pitches, Brian Bohanon was determined to finish the game.

Bohanon threw a nine-hit shutout and Todd Hollandsworth hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the Colorado Rockies to an 11-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.

Bohanon (10-9) was never in serious trouble as he pitched his second complete game and first shutout of the season. But the left-hander struggled in the ninth as his pitch count rose to 140.

"He had great stuff and great control," Rockies manager Buddy Bell said. "He didn't want to come out. It would have taken a whole team to get him out."

The Padres managed to advance only three baserunners to third base.

"To be able to maintain it, throwing for nine innings, that's what I take most gratification in," said Bohanon, who walked three and struck out three. "It was nice to be able to go out and control their bats and do whatever I wanted to."

The Rockies staked Bohanon to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, capped by Hollandsworth's first career grand slam. He added his 15th homer in the seventh inning, giving him a career-high five RBI.

"With the bases loaded, I'm really looking to drive the ball," said Hollandsworth. "I just wanted to make contact and get good wood on the ball."

Adam Eaton (5-3) made his first start since Sept. 3 after skipping his last turn due to exhaustion. The rookie gave up eight runs on 11 hits in five innings.

San Diego suffered through a poor night in every way. The Padres committed three errors and stranded 12 baserunners.

"It really doesn't get much worse than that," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "We were just terrible. That game started out bad and gradually got worse."

Todd Helton went 0-for-4, before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, to drop his major league-leading average to .378.

The Rockies opened the first inning with consecutive singles by Juan Pierre and Nefi Perez. After Eaton retired the next two batters, Jeffrey Hammonds' infield single loaded the bases.

A passed ball by Wiki Gonzalez allowed Pierre to score, and a walk to Todd Walker reloaded the bases. Hollandsworth followed with a drive that just cleared the right-field fence for a 5-0 lead.

"It helps to have a 5-0 lead," Bohanon said. "It's just a matter of me throwing strikes and keeping the defense in it."

Jeff Cirillo and Hammonds reached on singles in the second before Walker's two-run double.

Brent Mayne, who had three hits, added an RBI single in the fifth and Cirillo's infield single drove in a run in the seventh.
