Blum plays goat then hero for Expos

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Montreal Expos infielder Geoff Blum certainly had better birthday gift ideas for his mother than his performance in game one of Monday's doubleheader.

In that game, Blum had two first-inning errors that led to four unearned runs for the Philadelphia Phillies and a 5-2 loss that eliminated Montreal from playoff contention.

But Blum gave his mother, Connie, a more special present in the nightcap, hitting a go-ahead homer with two outs in the eighth to give the Expos a 7-6 win.

"A little redemption," Blum said after the game. "A little bit better taste in my mouth after (game two)."

Blum, who said he had called his mother to give her birthday wishes prior to the doubleheader, hinted that he "might call her again. I'm sure she's happier now."

With the Phillies leading 5-4, Brian Schneider hit a one-out single off Ed Vosberg. One out later, Blum hit a drive to right-center off Vicente Padilla (4-6) for his 10th homer.

"It was mostly visual," Blum said of hitting off of Padilla for the first time. "I had watched him pitch to (Tomas) De la Rosa so I had an idea."

"Before you could blink, instead of being up one, we were down one," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "(Padilla) left a fast ball over the plate."

The Expos added an insurance run in the ninth when Terry Jones doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch by Wayne Gomes.

Guillermo Mota (1-1) got the final out in the seventh for the win, and Scott Strickland got three outs for his fourth save. Rob Ducey hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the Phillies.

The Expos scored solo runs in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth innings.

Vladimir Guerrero went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader, with a homer in the first game and two RBIs in the second. The six hits are a Montreal record, tying seven others. The most recent to do it was Delino DeShields against Los Angeles in 1992.

Pat Burrell had two hits and two RBIs for the Phillies after sitting out the opener.

In the first game, Cliff Politte (3-2) gave up two runs and six hits in eight innings -- his longest outing in 14 career starts.

The only runs Politte gave up came on solo homers by Guerrero, his 36th, in the seventh inning, and Peter Bergeron in the eighth. No other Expo advanced past second off of Politte.

Blum's two errors led to four runs. With two outs and runners on first and second, Kevin Jordan hit a grounder through Blum's legs and down the left-field line, scoring Kevin Sefcik and Travis Lee.

After an RBI single by Ducey and a single by Gary Bennett, Blum fielded a grounder by Alex Arias, but threw it past first baseman Andy Tracy, scoring Ducey.

The Phillies added a run in the third when Lee doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ducey.

Dustin Hermanson (11-13), who had pitched his only shutout of the season in Philadelphia in April, gave up one earned run, eight hits and one walk in seven innings. He did not strike out a batter.

Jeff Brantley pitched the ninth for his 23rd save in 27 chances.

Montreal's second-game starter Mike Johnson gave up three runs and three hits in four innings. Phillies starter Randy Wolf gave up four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in six innings.

Game notes
Philadelphia's Bobby Abreu left the second game after the sixth inning with inflamation of the right elbow. His status is day-to-day. ... Montreal catcher Michael Barrett also left the game with a sore right elbow. He is scheduled to be examined by team doctors and his status is day-to-day. ... The announced attendance was 11,310, although the actual crowd was estimated at less than 6,000, the smallest crowd in Philadelphia this season, despite a half-price ticket promotion for the twinbill on a previously scheduled offday. ... The first game was played in 2 hours, 13 minutes. ... The loss gave Philadelphia a 59-84 record, matching the Cubs for the worst in baseball. ... After popping up to second in the ninth inning of the second game, Guerrero got ejected after arguing with home plate umpire Bill Welke. It was the second time in a week that Guerrero has been ejected, a fact that worries Expos manager Felipe Alou, who said that he "had to talk to him."
