But the Boston players who honored Carlton Fisk the best when
his number was retired by the Red Sox on Monday were Pedro Martinez
and Nomar Garciaparra -- the two most likely to join him on the
Fenway Park facade.
"I don't really want to think about that yet," Martinez said
after striking out 11 to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1. "I have
enough to worry about right now without worrying about retiring my
number. (That's for) a tired old man."
Martinez allowed six hits in eight innings and Garciaparra
snapped a 15-game RBI slump Monday to help the Red Sox remain two
games behind Cleveland in the AL wild-card race. Garciaparra, who
like Fisk was a unanimous choice as AL Rookie of the Year, had two
hits -- his 52nd multihit game of the season.
"If he keeps it up, obviously, he's going to have a day like
this," said Brogna, who grew up in Turners Falls imitating Fisk in
backyard wiffle ball games. "And same with Petey."
Making his first start since sparking last Tuesday's brawl with
Tampa Bay by hitting the first batter of the game, Martinez (16-4)
allowed six hits and one walk in eight innings. Derek Lowe pitched
the ninth.
"It's pretty significant when they retire a number in Boston.
You really have to be a special player," Red Sox manager Jimy
Williams said. "But Pedro is a special player."
Fisk is best known for waving his 12th-inning homer fair to win
Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. But the only one who cleared the
Green Monster on Monday was Mike Cameron, who hit a solo homer in
the seventh to give the Mariners their only run.
Still, it didn't make up for Cameron's blunder in the third,
when he fell while backing up to catch Jose Offerman's bases-loaded
fly ball. The triple opened the gates for Boston's five-run inning
and turned Jamie Moyer (11-9) into a hard-luck loser.
"I slipped and it cost us the game," Cameron said. "It's like
I had a million dollars in my pocket and someone took it away."
Moyer allowed five runs -- four earned -- and five hits in seven
innings, walking two and striking out five as the Mariners lost for
the 16th time in 21 games. He was matching Martinez until Donnie
Sadler reached with one out in the third when first baseman John
Olerud couldn't handle a grounder.
Manny Alexander singled and Darren Lewis walked before Offerman
hit a deep fly to center. Cameron drifted back and appeared to be
ready to catch the ball when he slipped and fell on his backside,
kicking up a big chunk of turf on his way down. The runners, who
had been holding, formed a traffic jam as they took off for the
plate.
Sadler and Alexander scored easily, but Lewis arrived at the
same time as the throw. Catcher Dan Wilson, bracing himself for a
collision, let the ball bounce by him as he blocked the plate;
Lewis slid short and knocked Wilson back, but then got up and
easily touched home to make it 3-0.
Carl Everett doubled to score Offerman -- his 100th RBI of the
season. Garciaparra, who last drove in a run on Aug. 15, dribbled
one through the right side of the infield to score Everett and make
it 5-0.

The teams split the series 2-2. The Mariners haven't won
any of their last seven series. ... Brian Daubach missed his fifth
consecutive game since he was injured in last Tuesday's brawl
against Tampa Bay. ... Edgar Martinez had two hits and his second
stolen base of the season. ... Everett is the sixth switch-hitter
to post 100 or more RBI in both leagues. He had 108 last season
with Houston. ... The Red Sox called up Donnie Sadler before the
game and started him at second base, batting eighth.
