BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox got a little help in the
pennant race from a late-season acquisition. Not Dante Bichette, but Rolando Arrojo.

Arrojo, acquired from Colorado on July 27, held Seattle to one
run over seven innings on Friday night to lead Boston to a 6-2
victory and send the AL West-leading Mariners to their 15th loss in
18 games.
"That's why I'm here, to help the team and do whatever I need
to win," Arrojo (4-1) said through interpreter Ramon Martinez
after giving up five hits and a walk, striking out three.
Lou Merloni doubled to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning
and Jose Offerman followed with a two-run single as the Red Sox
remained five games behind the Yankees in the AL East and one game
behind Cleveland in the wild card race.
Carl Everett had three hits, hitting his 33rd homer to make it
5-1 in the seventh and help Arrojo win his fourth consecutive
decision. Darren Lewis also had three hits, including a bloop RBI
single to make it 6-1 in the eighth.
"Arrojo stayed aggressive and kept the ball away from our
hitters," said Mariners shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who was 1-for-3
on Friday but is hitting .472 against Arrojo in his career. "It's
the best I've seen him pitch in a while."
Bichette, acquired from Cincinnati on Thursday at the playoff
roster deadline, had two hits in his first game with Boston.
"That has to make him feel good. He came to our club and got a
couple of hits his first night," Boston manager Jimy Williams
said. "He can hit."
John Halama (11-7) matched Arrojo with five shutout innings
before stumbling in Boston's four-run sixth.
Nomar Garciaparra and Everett singled before Bichette flied out
to shallow center field. After Troy O'Leary fouled out, Merloni hit
a line drive into the gap in right-center to score Garciaparra and
give Boston a 1-0 lead.
Offerman singled to score Everett and Merloni, then Jason
Varitek singled off Rodriguez' glove to score Offerman and make it
4-0. Stan Javier singled home a run in the Seattle ninth.
Halama allowed four runs on nine hits, walking one and striking
out three before new callup Kevin Hodges came in to start the
seventh. Carlos Guillen made it 4-1 in the seventh when he hit a
307-foot homer around the foul pole in right field.
Game notes
The Mariners activated OF Jay Buhner from the 15-day DL,
but he did not play. Buhner has not played since he was injured in
a collision with Mark McLemore on Aug. 16. ... Seattle called up
three other players from Triple-A Tacoma in addition to Hodges: RHP
Frankie Rodriguez, OF Charles Gipson and INF Brian Lesher. ...
Seattle is 0-10 in the first games of road trips this season. ...
The Red Sox recalled LHP Sang Lee from Triple-A Pawtucket and
activated OF Izzy Alcantara from the 15-day disabled list. ... RHP
Bret Saberhagen had pain in his shoulder throwing on Wednesday and
faces a decision whether to continue his comeback or shut it down
until next year. ... 1B Brian Daubach was not seriously injured in
Tuesday night's brawl against Tampa Bay. An MRI showed that his
left elbow was merely strained. ... The game was Boston's 41st
consecutive sellout at Fenway Park.
