Brewers snap three-game skid

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Alex Cora's throwing error cost the Dodgers the game, though a play in the first inning upset Los Angeles even more.

Richie Sexson hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Geoff Jenkins
Geoff Jenkins has four home runs against the Dodgers this season.

Geoff Jenkins, who had hit a solo homer off Dodger starter Darren Dreifort in the first, led off with a bloop single into short left field.

Cora raced over from shortstop, fielded the ball with his back to the plate, turned and threw wildly over the head of second baseman Mark Grudzielanek. First baseman Eric Karros backed up the play, but Jenkins easily reached second.

Sexson lined the third pitch from Terry Adams (6-7) into center, driving in Jenkins.

Cora said that he thought Jenkins might try to get to second, so he just made a play he's done countless times.

"I always do it," Cora said. "I just threw it away, and that's it."

Ray King (1-1) earned his first major league win by pitching a perfect ninth inning.

Dreifort and Brewer starter Jamey Wright each allowed two runs in eight innings. Dreifort struck out a career-high 11 and allowed just four hits.

Wright allowed six hits and seven walks, but the Dodgers failed to capitalize on his wildness, especially in the first.

Wright started the game by walking Tom Goodwin, Grudzielanek and Shawn Green. Eric Karros followed with a sacrifice fly.

After a groundout put runners on second and third, Adrian Beltre hit a grounder toward shortstop Mark Loretta.

The ball was ruled to have hit Green as he was running to third and second base umpire Jeff Kellogg called him out. Beltre was credited with a single, but it cost the Dodgers a run and possibly more.

Loretta said he didn't see the ball hit Green.

Dodgers manager Davey Johnson argued the call and was upset that Kellogg told him that he heard the ball hit Green.

"The only thing I don't like about that call," said Johnson, "was that if you're going to make that call you got to see it and it's got to change direction. You can't just hear something."

Johnson appealed to plate umpire Eric Cooper, but Cooper told him that he didn't see it any differently.

The inning was over and the Dodgers missed a chance to give Dreifort a few more runs.

Wright, who has not won since July 28 when he defeated Colorado, retired the side in order in the second and third and got out of the fifth when the Brewers turned their first of three double plays in the game.

"He righted himself," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "Once he got out of the first inning, he pitched a good game."

Tyler Houston connected off Dreifort in the fifth as Milwaukee took a 2-1 lead, but the Dodgers' tied the score at 2 in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Jim Leyritz.

Game notes
Karros' sacrifice fly in the first was his team-leading ninth of the season. ... Jenkins is tied with Jeromy Burnitz with a team-leading 24 homers. ...
