Harnisch handles Florida, rain delay

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MIAMI (AP) -- Four hours after he took the mound, Pete Harnisch was still pitching for the Cincinnati Reds.

Harnisch turned in a marathon performance of a different sort Saturday night, working around a 2-hour, 40-minute rain delay in the second inning to pitch six innings and beat the Florida Marlins 3-2.

"You don't ever feel normal in those circumstances," Harnisch said. "I was just trying to get through five or six innings. I just really didn't want to pack it in and throw that on the bullpen the rest of the game."

The crowd of 35,392 was the largest of the season at Pro Player Stadium. Only about 5,000 fans remained when play resumed after a thunderstorm, and Marlins starter Jesus Sanchez was taken out of the game.

But Harnisch (6-6) returned to the mound after the long delay and shut out Florida over the next 4 1-3 innings, allowing just two hits. He gave up five hits and one run in all. Harnisch pitched despite a sore ankle that he had taped during the game.

"He's a warrior," Marlins manager John Boles said. "That's some kind of effort. He didn't skip a beat. He has always had a reputation for being a competitor, and he certainly showed it tonight."

The rain delay lasted longer than the game, which was played in 2 hours, 36 minutes. The final out came early Sunday.

"It'll be tough to get up in the morning," said Chris Stynes, who drove in the Reds' second run. "We're lucky we didn't end up going into extra innings."

Harnisch improved to 6-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 11 starts since spending eight weeks on the disabled list with weakness in his right shoulder.

Danny Graves, Cincinnati's fourth pitcher, got the final four outs for his 22nd save in 26 chances. The Reds won their third in a row, and the Marlins have lost three in a row.

Florida ended a scoreless streak of 23 1-3 innings when Mark Kotsay homered in the first. Preston Wilson's infield single drove in a run in the eighth, but with runners at first and third, Mike Lowell grounded out to end the inning.

Barry Larkin hit his 11th home run to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead in the first. Kotsay snapped a 1-for-17 slump with his 11th homer in the bottom of the inning.

Cincinnati scored twice in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Larkin walked and Alex Ochoa singled against Vic Darensbourg (4-3). Stynes greeted Braden Looper with an RBI single, and when center fielder Wilson threw wildly to the infield, Ochoa came all the way around from first with an unearned run.

"I was throwing the ball to second base," Wilson said. "I just tried to throw behind the runner at second, and it got away."

"Every time we make a mistake it kills you, because we're not scoring any runs," Boles said.

The Reds overcame a mental mistake by catcher Jason LaRue in the sixth. When Wilson struck out for the second out with Henry Rodriguez on first, LaRue tossed the ball to the ground and headed for the dugout, thinking the inning was over, and Rodriguez raced to second.

But center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. chased down Lowell's 400-foot fly to end the inning.
