SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Dave Magadan didn't even have to lift the bat
off his shoulder to bring in the winning run for the San Diego
Padres.
Magadan drew a bases-loaded walk from Dennis Cook to force home
the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning Monday night,
giving the Padres a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets.
| | Mets pitcher Dennis Cook was angry with the call after he walked in the winning run in the 10th inning Monday night against San Diego. |
"We had the right guy up in that situation," manager Bruce
Bochy said. "He's a professional hitter. He's so cool, he's got
ice water in his veins. We'll take it."
The Padres, who blew a four-run lead, took advantage of Cook's
wildness. He walked five in 1 2/3 innings.
Magadan, pinch-hitting for winner Trevor Hoffman, was taking all
the way after working the count to 2-0. He walked on a 3-1 count,
and Cook walked off the mound gesturing at plate umpire Gerry
Davis.
"I don't face left-handers very often, so I definitely have to
get a good pitch to hit," said Magadan, a lefty. "I was seeing
the ball pretty good and he threw me a first-pitch slider. Then he
threw another ball and I was fortunate to work ahead in the count
the whole time. A win is a win is a win. Anyway we can get it, I'm
happy for it."
Cook (6-3) loaded the bases on Ruben Rivera's fielder's choice,
rookie Mike Darr's single -- his third hit of the night -- and a walk
to Wiki Gonzalez.
Cook yelled at Davis in the 10th after a pitch to Desi Relaford
was called a ball.
"I thought you had to throw it to a size of a dinner plate,"
Cook said. "I think the strike zone was really, really tight. He
had a lot to do with the outcome of the game, not the players."
Said manager Bobby Valentine: "Let's say there were a lot of
close pitches and not many of them were called strikes."
Hoffman (4-4) retired the Mets in the 10th, giving up only a
broken-bat single by nemesis Mike Piazza.
The Padres, last in the NL West, improved to 5-2 this year
against the Mets, who lead the wild-card race.
The Padres gave Woody Williams a 4-0 lead after three innings,
but he allowed Benny Agbayani's three-run homer with two outs in
the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh.
Williams, making his 10th start since having surgery to repair
an aneurysm near his right armpit on May 4, went nine innings, but
got a no-decision. Coming off his second complete game in four
starts, he allowed three earned runs on nine hits.
Cook walked two in the bottom of the ninth, but Ryan Klesko
struck out to end the threat. Klesko also struck out with the bases
loaded to end the second.
With two outs in the sixth, Agbayani pulled the Mets to 4-3 when
he hit the first pitch he saw from Williams over the fence in
left-center for his 11th homer. Edgardo Alfonzo and Robin Ventura
were aboard on singles.
New York's Mike Bordick reached leading off the seventh on Desi
Relaford's throwing error that pulled Klesko off first base.
Bordick took second on Lenny Harris' single and scored on Derek
Bell's chopper to the first-base side of the mound. Williams
fielded the ball and instead of going for the out at first, turned
all the way around and threw home, where Bordick was easily safe.
Pinch-hitter Darryl Hamilton walked with one out in the ninth,
and with two outs appeared to have stolen second, but Bell was
called out on interference for not getting out of the way of
Gonzalez's throw, ending the inning.
Williams got into trouble by loading the bases on three straight
singles with one out in the fourth, but Piazza was thrown out
trying to score on Jay Payton's flyout to right field. Piazza was
off the bag when the ball was caught and had to go back to tag up,
and was thrown out on a relay.
Mets starter Glendon Rusch threw 70 pitches in the first two
innings, allowing an unearned run in the first on Phil Nevin's
single and then walking Desi Relaford with the bases loaded in the
second. The Padres added two runs in the third when Rivera tripled
into the right-center field gap to score Bret Boone, then scored on
Darr's single.
Game notes Mets OF Darryl Hamilton missed his third straight start
with an arthritic left big toe, but pinch-hit for the second
straight game. ... RHP Pat Mahomes will start Tuesday for the Mets
in place of LHP Mike Hampton, who will miss at least one start due
to a broken rib. ... Nevin has reached base via hit or walk in 42
straight games.
