GAME LOG
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Shawn Estes can count on the rest of the
San Francisco Giants to lift him, even when he's got his game
together.
Estes extended his winning streak to six games with a nine-hit,
complete game Sunday as the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1.
| | Shawn Estes (11-3) hasn't lost in 10 starts since the Seattle Mariners beat him in an interleague game June 10. |
Estes (11-3), who hasn't lost in 10 starts since Seattle beat
him June 10, allowed an unearned run, struck out four and walked
one. It was his ninth career complete game, his fourth this season.
San Francisco backed him with five double plays -- the most by
the Giants since May 11, 1998, against Montreal. San Francisco has
turned five double plays in a game three times in the past 13
years.
"They say it's a pitchers' best friend. Well, it's certainly my
best friend today," Estes said.
"It's always big when you can get 10 outs on five pitches -- that's what Shawn did," Giants manager Dusty Baker said.
Estes also drove in a run. His 10 RBI are the most by a Giants
pitcher since Juan Marichal had 15 in 1966.
Ellis Burks had a sacrifice fly and a two-run double as the
Giants won for the fifth time in seven games.
Pittsburgh rookie Bronson Arroyo (2-4) was hurt by three errors.
He lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs -- only four
earned -- and six hits.
Marvin Benard singled leading off the first, took third on
catcher Jason Kendall's throwing error and scored on Bill Mueller's
single.
Barry Bonds' walk and Jeff Kent's single loaded the bases, and
J.T. Snow hit a sacrifice fly to deep center. Burks followed with a
foul popup that was caught by left fielder Emil Brown, and Bonds
tagged up and scored for a 3-0 lead.
"The first hit in the game was pretty much how the rest of the
game went," Arroyo said. "I never did get any rhythm. I felt
good, but I went out there and got behind in the count, and they
whacked the heck out of the ball. They took advantage of every
mistake I made."
Bobby Estalella scored in the second inning when Mueller's popup
was dropped by Brown in shallow left for an error.
Burks doubled for a 6-0 lead in the fifth after Kent singled and
took third when Kevin Young misplayed Snow's grounder down the
first-base line.
Mike Benjamin hit an RBI double in the seventh for the Pirates.
Game notes
Bonds, not in the lineup Saturday because of a sore right
calf, was back in the lineup. ... Kent needs two RBI to reach 100,
becoming the seventh Giant in franchise history to drive in 100
runs in four consecutive seasons. ... Joe Nathan, on the disabled
list with an inflamed right shoulder, is to make his second rehab
start Tuesday night for Triple-A Fresno. ... The Pirates traded OF
Bruce Aven to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named. In
72 games with the Pirates, Aven hit .250 with five homers and 25
RBI. ... OF Adrian Brown, on the disabled list with a strained
left hamstring, started in left field Saturday night for Triple-A
Nashville. He was 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. ... Aramis
Ramirez got a single off Estes in the seventh, extending his
