Giants wrap road trip with 7-5 record

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Brewers catcher Raul Casanova got the pitch he was hoping to see.

Casanova rapped a two-run double to highlight a three-run rally in the eighth inning and Milwaukee avoided being swept by the San Francisco Giants with a 6-4 victory Wednesday.

"He threw the ball right where I was looking for it," Casanova said of his hit down the right-field line that broke a 4-4 tie. "I hit it right and we won the game."

Trailing 4-3, the Brewers tied it in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff single by Ron Belliard followed by a bunt single by Marquis Grissom. Both runners moved up on a flyout by Geoff Jenkins. Following a walk to Richie Sexson, Belliard scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeromy Burnitz off Livan Hernandez (10-8).

After Charlie Hayes walked to load the bases, Casanova greeted Felix Rodriguez with a double down the right field line to score Grissom and Sexson.

"A lot of good things happened," Milwaukee manager Davy Lopes said, then praised Casanova for his contributions while resting regular catcher Henry Blanco.

"He's been doing an outstanding job ever since we brought him up to the big leagues. He's had several chances before, but has failed ... this is a new lease on life for him."

San Francisco manager Dusty Baker hoped the rally would end with only one run. "After they tied it, I thought we had a shot to get out of there," he said. "Livan pitched Burnitz tough all day, but what I didn't want him to do was walk Sexson.

"It all started with that infield single and that hard bunt. All this wouldn't have happened if we'd fielded that bunt."

Hernandez said, "I was a little tired in that inning, but I only gave up one real hit. I threw good, except for maybe the eighth inning. With the exception of two pitches, I threw good."

Casanova was 2-for-4 and raised his batting average to .273. "Right now," Lopes said, "he's a guy you like to see at the plate in those situations."

The game, which started 12 minutes late due to rain, also had a 57-minute rain delay after the third inning with Milwaukee leading 1-0. The delay may have had an effect on Brewers starter Jamey Wright, but not Barry Bonds.

Wright hit Bill Mueller with a pitch leading off the fourth, then Bonds hit his 34th homer of the season when he launched a 425-foot drive to center field to give San Francisco a 2-1 lead. It tied Gary Sheffield for the major league lead.

The Giants added two more runs in the inning on a single by Jeff Kent, a walk to J.T. Snow, an RBI single by Ramon Martinez and run-scoring double by Bobby Estalella. It could have been a bigger rally but left fielder Jenkins made a diving catch of a line drive by Ellis Burks for the first out.

Hernandez allowed all six runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Hernandez surrendered a run in the first inning when Grissom walked, went to third on a single by Jenkins and came home on a wild pitch.

The Brewers closed to 4-3 on solo home runs in the fourth by Sexson, his second since being acquired from Cleveland last week, and Jenkins in the sixth.

Wright pitched seven innings, allowing five hits while striking out three and walking three. Except for the four-run fourth, Wright didn't allow a runner past first base before being lifted for a pinch-hitter and being relieved by Juan Acevedo (1-3), who pitched a scoreless eighth and earned the victory.

"Jamey battled," Lopes said. "He didn't have his best stuff, but he kept us close."

Curtis Leskanic pitched the ninth for his third save. He issued two walks with one out before retiring the final two batters on infield grounders. Mueller grounded out to end the game with Bonds on deck.

"I tried to go right at Mueller," Leskanic said. "You don't want the National League's MVP up with the bases loaded."
