PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Adrian Beltre drove in three runs and Alex Cora snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run triple as the Los Angeles Dodgers split a doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates by rallying for a 5-3 victory.

Beltre hit a two-run homer off Pittsburgh rookie starter Bronson Arroyo to tie the game in the fourth inning before drawing the Dodgers even again, 3-3, in the eighth with his RBI double off reliever Mike Williams.

"Beltre had a big night," Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson said. "The way we've been swinging the bats, we've been dead. We were lucky to win one in Philly. (We have) too many good hitters on this team for this to continue."

Cora followed by lining Williams' 1-1 pitch down the right-field line for a two-run triple that provided the winning margin.

"Right now, we are in the middle of a lot of things," Cora said. "If we keep winning, the series will be right there. If we want to make it to the next level, guys in the lineup will have to pick it up. Beltre did his job and I got a good pitch."

The rally made a winner of rookie Matt Herges (8-0), who tossed a scoreless seventh inning. He became the first Dodger hurler to record eight straight victories since Pedro Martinez did it as a reliever in 1993.

Terry Adams pitched a perfect eighth before Jeff Shaw recorded the final three outs for his 17th save of the season and 150th of his career.

"If I look back four years ago, I'd never say I would be here with 150 saves," Shaw said. "I think Jeff Brantley was the big difference. Basically he showed me how to get guys out."

Pirates reliever Marc Wilkins (2-2) took the loss by allowing a walk to Shawn Green and Todd Hundley's single prior to Beltre's double.

Starter Ismael Valdes began his second stint with Los Angeles by allowing two runs and four hits with eight strikeouts in four innings. He threw 98 pitches.

"It felt good," Valdes said. "I want to help the team anyway I can. It was just a matter of getting into a rhythm. All of my starts, I have butterflies. Yesterday butterflies, today butterflies as well. After that first inning, I seemed to get my rhythm."

Arrojo allowed two runs and four hits with five strikeouts in six innings. The 23-year-old righthander took the loss at Los Angeles on July 17 by allowing five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

"I was happy with my performance," Arrojo said. "I came out with a lead. Tonight, things might have turned out different but that didn't happen. We seemed to be making progress."

John Vander Wal, who signed a two-year contract extension with Pittsburgh on Monday, hit a two-run home run off Valdes in the bottom of the first inning to open the scoring. It was his 16th of the season.

Enrique Wilson gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead by starting off the fifth inning with his first home run for his new club. He was activated off the disabled list prior to the first game and was hitless in his first two at-bats.

Los Angeles pitcher Kevin Brown was ejected by home plate umpire Mike Vanvleet in the seventh inning for arguing Gary Sheffield's strikeout from the bench.

Pittsburgh posted a 6-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader as Jimmy Anderson and two relievers combined on a six-hitter.
