BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles gave their fans a glimpse
of the future Sunday, displaying speed and daring baserunning that
hadn't been seen at Camden Yards in years.
Not by the home team, anyway.
| | Orioles starter John Parrish allowed just four hits and four runs in six innings in earning his first victory in the major leagues.
|
Rookie Luis Matos drove in four runs and tied a team record with
four steals as the new-look Orioles defeated the Cleveland Indians
10-7.
Melvin Mora singled home a run, Brook Fordyce had two hits in
his Baltimore debut and John Parrish earned his first major league
victory for the Orioles, who this weekend stepped up a youth
movement that began with the promotion of Matos from Double-A Bowie
last month.
The Orioles scored 10 runs without benefit of a homer, a rarity
for a team that has long relied on the long ball. Baltimore stole
five bases and boldly took an extra base whenever possible. Even
Fordyce got into the act, sneaking into second base on a single
during a throw to third base.
"It's nice to have speed in spots where you can take advantage
of things, and we were able to do that today," manager Mike
Hargrove said. "We ran the bases aggressively. It's infectious,
and it picks everybody up. It's the way you'd like to play the
game, making things happen."
David Segui, playing his second game with Cleveland after being
obtained in a trade with Texas, hit his fifth career grand slam to
put the Indians up 4-2 in the sixth inning.
But Baltimore scored four in the bottom half and added four more
in the seventh to pull away.
"We had a bit of trouble holding runners on today and that hurt
us," Indians manager Charlie Manuel said. "They have some young
guys in the lineup who can run and we couldn't stop them. Having
baserunners that are aggressive really opened the door for them."
Parrish (1-1), making his second appearance, allowed four runs,
four hits and five walks in six innings, striking out five.
"This is one of them games where I just got by. The guys really
did a great job behind me," he said.
Chuck Finley (9-8) gave up four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings and
hurt himself with a costly throwing error in the Orioles' four-run
sixth.
Matos, called up June 18 from Double-A Bowie, stole second base
in the second inning, swiped two bases in the sixth, and tied Brady
Anderson's club record by stealing third in the seventh after
hitting a three-run double.
Matos then scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson to put the
Orioles up 10-5.
"This is my best game in the big leagues," said Matos, who
came in hitting .195. "I'm enjoying the time right now."
Matos has been used periodically since joining the Orioles, in
part because the 21-year-old outfielder still has a lot to learn.
"He's still a work in progress. He's going to have days that
are the opposite end of the spectrum," Hargrove said. "That's
usually the track record of most young players. Does that mean that
he's not any good or not ready to play? Not necessarily. Luis is a
good player."
Mora, traded to Baltimore on Friday for veteran Mike Bordick,
singled in Matos in the sixth to put the Orioles up 5-4. Mora had
two hits.
Roberto Alomar and Manny Ramirez homered in the ninth for the
Indians, who stranded 10 in their second consecutive defeat. Cleveland
left 12 runners on base in a 4-0 defeat Saturday.
Fordyce went 2-for-4 and scored twice. He joined the Orioles on
Sunday morning after a flight from California upon learning he was
traded by the Chicago White Sox in a deal for Charles Johnson and
Harold Baines.
Game notes The start of the game was delayed by rain for 1 hour, 33
minutes. ... It was Ramirez's third homer in three games. ... Segui
is 4-for-8 in his two games with Cleveland. ... Jeff Conine had
three hits and two RBI for the Orioles, who have won two consecutive after losing five in a row.
