Cubs' winning streak stopped at six

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO -- Tim Worrell made a mistake at the wrong time.

Rich Aurilia hit a two-run homer off Worrell with one out in the ninth inning, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Cubs 2-0 Friday to end Chicago's longest winning streak of the season at six games.

"Something had to break," Giants manager Dusty Baker said of the pitching duel between starters Livan Hernandez and Cubs rookie Ruben Quevedo. "We had sensational pitching on both sides."

J.T. Snow earned a one-out walk from Worrell (1-2) and Aurilia sent a 2-0 pitch into the left-field bleachers for his 11th homer.

"You get a little hope with the wind blowing in but the way (left fielder) Henry (Rodriguez) was going back, I knew it was out," Worrell said. "I made a mistake and the guy hit it out of the ballpark."

Aurilia was 0-for-5 against Worrell before the homer.

"I wasn't thinking home run," Aurilia said. "I was thinking not to hit into a double play. I don't want to end the inning with Barry (Bonds) behind me."

After the homer, Aurilia said, "I just wanted to get back in the dugout and let our pitchers get out there and finish it."

Hernandez (10-7), trying for his first career complete-game shutout, allowed seven hits in 8 1-3 innings, struck out five and walked three, improving to 6-1 in his last eight starts.

Jose Nieves singled off Hernandez with one out in the ninth and was the last batter the Giants' starter faced.

Said Hernandez: "I came out of the game and said, `Why did I throw the ball in there?"'

Robb Nen struck out pinch-hitters Jeff Reed and Gary Matthews Jr. for his 25th save in 30 chances, tying the major league record for saves in July with 13.

San Francisco has won 18 of its last 24 games and is 10-5 since the All-Star break.

Quevedo, making his third major league start, allowed two hits in seven innings. Called up Friday from Triple-A Iowa for the fourth time this season, Quevedo gave up a leadoff single to Marvin Benard in the first and did not allow another hit until Aurilia doubled with two outs in the seventh.

"I made pretty good pitches when I needed to," Quevedo said.

The right-hander, who retired 13 out of 14 batters in one stretch, walked five and struck out a career-high six.

"Part of it was because it was our first time seeing him and part of it was because he can pitch," Baker said.

"Quevedo was outstanding. He did a great job for us," said Rodriguez. "Livan was a little better."

Chicago loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth on a single by Mark Grace and walks to Sammy Sosa and Rodriguez, but Damon Buford struck out.

After Aurilia's double with two outs in the seventh, Bobby Estalella was intentionally walked to bring up Hernandez, who lofted a ball into the gap in shallow left only to have Rodriguez make a spectacular diving catch.

"It was the only chance I had, so I went for it," Rodriguez said. "I came in here and watched (the replay) and said 'Wow."'

Willie Greene doubled off the left-field wall leading off the bottom half of the seventh but left with a mildly sprained right ankle after appearing to twist it stepping on second.

Game notes
Nen tied Rod Beck (1998 with the Cubs) and John Franco (1988 with Cincinnati) for most saves in July. ... Quevedo was appearing in his ninth major league game. He took the spot in the rotation vacated Wednesday when Ismael Valdes was traded to Los Angeles. Quevedo's other starts were May 30 against Atlanta (5-2 loss) and June 25 against Florida (8-7 loss). ... The umpires wore a variety of shirts and pants because their gear did not arrive by game time.
