Pirates get only second win since break

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Jose Silva focused on the eight solid innings he pitched rather than the one he didn't.

Wil Cordero drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Silva won for the first time since June 13, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Milwaukee Brewers 9-2 Thursday.

Silva (6-4) allowed four hits in eight innings, struck out five and walked three as Pittsburgh won for only the second time in eight games following the All-Star break. Silva had gone 0-2 in six starts since his previous win, which was in relief.

Brian Giles
Brian Giles, who homered earlier in the game, scores on Bruce Aven's double in the sixth inning.

"Everything was going good today," Silva said. "We scored a lot of runs. You can go out and pitch a little bit more relaxed. You just throw the ball, hit your spots and pitch more relaxed.

Scott Sauerbeck pitched the ninth, depriving Silva of his first complete game in 41 career starts.

"I haven't been out there that long in maybe a year," said Silva, who retired 17 of his last 18 batters. "The manager made the decision. It really doesn't matter to me. I'm happy that we won.

"For me, eight innings, I haven't done that in a long, long time. My last outing was an inning and two-thirds. I'm very happy with the outcome today. I went eight, kept the ball down, threw strikes."

Jimmy Haynes (9-9) allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Brian Giles hit a two-run homer in the first, his 23rd, following a two-out single by Cordero, and Mike Benjamin's homer made it 3-0 in the third.

"It's always tough to fall behind in a game anyway," Haynes said. "Your team is not going to come back and score five, six runs every game out."

Geoff Jenkins' two-run homer pulled Milwaukee within a run in the bottom half, but Pittsburgh increased the lead to 5-2 on Pat Meares' run-scoring single in the fourth and Cordero's RBI double in the fifth.

"When you get behind, you just can't throw the ball over the plate," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said of Haynes. "You've got to put it in the area where they can't hit it. He's not been able to do that. Consequently, bad things happen."

Cordero hit a two-run double in the sixth off Valerio De Los Santos. Bruce Aven hit an RBI double off David Weathers later in the inning.

"It's been a while since we got good pitching and good hitting in the same game," Pirates manager Gene LaMont said. "We scored some runs. Today, we put them both together. Hopefully, we can build on that."
