Moyer's magic continues at Oakland Coliseum

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jamie Moyer can't really explain it. Nothing bad seems to happen to him in Oakland.

Jamie Moyer
Mariners pitcher Jamie Moyer, who has won seven of his last eight starts, says nothing bad ever happens to him in Oakland.

Moyer extended his Oakland Coliseum winning streak to four starts as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Athletics 6-3 Wednesday night. He has won five straight overall against the A's and is 10-5 against team for his career.

"I think I just might be very comfortable here," he said. "I seem to get the right bounces on the ball, and nothing bad ever happens to me here."

Moyer (10-3), who has won seven of his last eight starts, allowed three runs on six hits in seven-plus innings and struck out four. Mark McLemore drove in three runs.

Moyer had not allowed a runner to score in the Coliseum for 28 innings until Ben Grieve hit a solo homer in the seventh inning, his 18th of the year.

The Mariners went up 3-0 in the second. John Mabry singled, went to second when David Bell was hit by a pitch and scored on Dan Wilson's sacrifice bunt.

One out later, Rickey Henderson walked, then scored along with Bell on McLemore's double.

Carlos Guillen hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, then scored on McLemore's second run-scoring double of the game. McLemore scored on Edgar Martinez's single to give Seattle a 6-0 lead.

In the eighth, Moyer gave up a two-run home run to pinch-hitter Ramon Hernandez. It was the A's first pinch-hit homer of the season.

Moyer's last two outings in Oakland were both complete game-shutouts: He threw a four-hitter for a 8-0 Mariners' victory on Sept. 17, 1998, then had a three-hitter June 12, 1999 for a 5-0 win.

But it wasn't all Moyer, A's manager Art Howe said.

"I'll tell you, they made some plays behind him too," Howe said. "You have to give them credit -- they played well defensively."

Moyer agreed, crediting McLemore.

"We had great plays tonight, especially up the middle," he said. "Mac made three plays that saved us."

Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth, striking out the side, for his 23rd save.

A's starter Kevin Appier (8-7), who is 0-4 over his last five starts, allowed six runs on 10 hits over six-plus innings.

"My command wasn't horrible, but it was off enough that I ended up behind in the count on a lot of guys," Appier said. "Very frustrating night."

Game notes
Moyer's last loss was June 28 against Anaheim. ... Henderson needs one more hit to pass Mel Ott on the all-time, putting him alone in 34th place. ... Mariners manager Lou Piniella says Alex Rodriguez should be ready to play next week. Rodriguez, who has a strained right knee, is eligible to come of the disabled list July 23. "There's a good chance to see A-Rod next week," Piniella said. "He's making significant improvement every day." ... Henderson was honored Wednesday as the A's Player of the Century as part of the 100th anniversary of the franchise. ... A's manager Art Howe plans to platoon Eric Chavez and Olmedo Saenz at third base. Saenz earned his way into the job with a hot bat. ... A's slugger John Jaha underwent surgery for tendinitis in his left shoulder on Wednesday. A's trainer Larry Davis said the damage to the shoulder was extensive, and Jaha won't be back for the rest of the season. "It was incredible he was able to swing a bat at all," Davis said.
