CHICAGO (AP) -- By Mike Sirotka's own admission, he is not a
strikeout pitcher.
| | Sox pitcher Mike Sirotka calls himself lucky after striking out a career-high 10 batters in Tuesday's victory over Milwaukee. |
Sirotka fanned a career-high 10 and the Chicago White Sox took
advantage of two errors to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 Tuesday
night for their fourth straight victory.
Sirotka (9-7) allowed one run and six hits in eight innings. He
became the first White Sox left-hander to strike out at least 10
since Wilson Alvarez got 12 on May 11, 1997, against Oakland.
"Luck," Sirotka said of his performance. "It's kind of a
fluke for me."
Sirotka's previous high for strikeouts in a game was eight, set
twice.
"My general trend is to get four or five guys on strikes,"
Sirotka said. "But I really kept them guessing tonight."
Chris Singleton hit a two-run single in a four-run third and
Greg Norton drove in two runs as the White Sox finished interleague
play 12-6.
The Brewers, who lost their fourth straight game, went 6-9
against the AL.
Milwaukee scored four times in the ninth, with Marquis Grissom
breaking an 0-for-19 slump with a two-run single. After Keith
Foulke and Bob Howry failed to end the game, Kelly Wunsch got the
final out with runners on first and second for his first major
league save.
"We made it a little bit closer in the ninth, made people sit a
little forward in their seats, but we still won the game," Wunsch
said.
Jamey Wright (5-3) gave up seven runs -- five earned -- on nine
hits and five walks in seven innings. He has gone at least seven
innings in seven of his 11 starts.
"I really wanted to beat these guys, the best team in
baseball," Wright said. "They have such a good lineup -- it's the
ultimate test for a pitcher."
Norton hit an RBI double in the Chicago second for a 1-0 lead.
The White Sox batted around in the third. Ray Durham and Jose
Valentin walked and Frank Thomas doubled home a run.
Paul Konerko walked and Singleton singled, scoring two runs, and
Norton added an RBI single.
Aggressive baserunning and two Milwaukee miscues led to two more
runs in the Chicago fifth. With two outs, Singleton walked and Lee
bounced a single that left fielder James Mouton threw over the head
of third baseman Charlie Hayes.
The ball rolled to the fence behind home plate and Wright
retrieved it, but made a wild throw to the plate that allowed Lee
to score.
"It happened so fast," Wright said. "I ran over there to see
if I could get it quick and it took a funny hop, and I just flung
it. I should've held onto it."
Raul Casanova hit an RBI single in the sixth to make it 7-1.
Game notes Sirotka last struck out eight two years ago. ... Norton
entered the game with four hits in his last 40 at-bats (.100). ...
Chicago's regular third baseman Herbert Perry was scratched with
discomfort in his Achilles' tendon and calf in his left leg. He was
available for pinch-hitting and hopes to start Wednesday at
Minnesota. ... The White Sox last swept the Brewers May 24-26,
1996, when both were in the AL.
