Perry gets his pitch and pounds it

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Herbert Perry was looking for an off-speed pitch.

When he got it, Perry sent it over the left-field fence for a two-run homer that lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in 13 innings Wednesday night.

"It was a 2-0 changeup," Perry said. "I was looking off-speed because of the situation. I was just trying to stay back. I got a good pitch and hit it.

Herbert Perry
Herbert Perry, left, is congratulated by teammates Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Lee (45) after his two-run home run in the 13th inning.

"Any time you win a game that you probably shouldn't have won, those things add up at the end of the season. You take two out of three when you shouldn't have won any, and that keeps up the momentum. We're on a little bit of a roll, or a lot of a roll. We've been able to stay loose, enjoy the game and never really give up."

Perry's home run off Doug Bochtler ruined the reliever's 30th birthday.

"The problem was the 2-0," Bochtler said. "I fell behind and he knew he was going to get something to hit. When you stay ahead of guys, you have a better chance of getting guys out."

Kelly Wunsch (3-2) pitched two shutout innings for the win. Bochtler (0-1) lost for Kansas City, which outhit the White Sox 17-13.

"We battled back and got some big breaks," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. "Guys continued to fight and continued to battle the whole way through. Herbert Perry is a guy that has been hitting for us all year. Actually our whole team is a hero. I can bring guys off the bench and they contribute."

Rey Sanchez, who went 4-for-7, loaded the bases for Kansas City when he reached on a bunt single with one out in the 11th. With left fielder Carlos Lee brought in as a fifth infielder, Mike Sweeney hit a bouncer up the middle to second baseman Ray Durham, who stepped on second and threw to first for a double play.

"You hit a sacrifice fly in that situation," Kansas City manager Tony Muser said. "That's what we needed.

"The boys played hard and we had some opportunities to win that thing."

With runners at the corners in the 12th following an intentional walk to Frank Thomas -- his AL-leading 14th -- Magglio Ordonez hit into an inning-ending double play, with the runners on both ends appearing to reach safely.

"Last year, we probably wouldn't have been able to overcome that situation," Manuel said. "This year we've been able to hang in there and overcome more. Obviously we have gotten a lot of breaks, and we have taken advantage of them."

Kansas City led 3-2 before Paul Konerko homered in the eighth off Dan Reichert, who allowed eight hits in a career-high eight innings. He struck out six -- also a career high -- and walked one. Reichert, who made his third start of the season, appeared 26 times out of the bullpen before joining the rotation on June 24.

White Sox starter Jim Parque gave up three runs -- two earned -- and 10 hits in six innings.

Dave McCarty had RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings for the Royals. His second double -- a sixth-inning drive to the gap in left-center -- drove home Joe Randa, who reached on an error by shortstop Jose Valentin, for a 3-2 lead.

Kansas City could have had a big inning, if not for a baserunning blunder by McCarty, who stood off second with no outs as Gregg Zaun grounded to the shortstop hole. Valentin got to the ball but had no play on Zaun, so he threw behind McCarty, who was tagged out by Durham, picked earlier in the day for the AL All-Star team.

Muser argued that McCarty beat the tag and was ejected by second base umpire Jim McKean. Muser was ejected for the second time this season, and on the homestand.

Luis Ordaz and Johnny Damon grounded out, ending the inning.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the second when Chris Singleton tripled and scored on Carlos Lee's sacrifice fly.

Thomas, overlooked for the All-Star team, hit an RBI single in the third for a 2-0 lead.

Kansas City tied it in the fourth on Randa's RBI grounder and McCarty's run-scoring double.
