CHICAGO (AP) -- The ballpark balloting may be over, but Magglio
Ordonez and James Baldwin made a push Sunday for spots on the AL
All-Star team.
Ordonez homered twice and drove in five runs and Frank Thomas
added a solo shot, helping Baldwin and the Chicago White Sox
complete a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox, 8-2.
"This is a very, very good ballclub," Thomas said of the White
Sox, now 52-29 and off to the second-best start in franchise
history behind the 1919 club (53-28).

CHICAGO (AP) -- Red Sox outfielder Carl Everett yelled at Boston
Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy in the clubhouse before Sunday's
game, upset about a story that appeared in the paper a day earlier.
Shaughnessy wrote that Everett and Jeff Frye got into an "animated
discussion" in the eighth inning of Friday's game against Chicago,
and quoted Frye as saying, "We weren't getting into it."
Shaughnessy had tried to talk to Everett after Friday's game,
and Everett was quoted in the story as saying, "I have nothing to
say."
Coach Tommy Harper stepped between the two and directed
Everett into the trainer's room, but Everett continued his
obsenity-filled verbal tirade.
"It became, 'Get out of here, I'll never talk to you again and
don't ever talk to me again,' " Shaughnessy said.
Everett also yelled at Glenn Wilburn, Boston's baseball
information coordinator, and told him to get Shaughnessy out of the
clubhouse. Shaughnessy left on his own.

All-Star starters and reserves will be announced this week.
"Anybody can go," said Baldwin (11-3). "They want big names
on the All-Star Game and a lot of people look at this team and
there aren't any big names. Frank and Magglio, those guys are
pretty big, but we've still got to focus on our No. 1 goal, which
is to win.
"Sooner or later, people are going to recognize the White
Sox," he said.
Ordonez matched his career high for RBI with a three-run homer
in the first inning and a solo drive following Thomas' 23rd home
run in the third. Ordonez also hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
"Magglio, he's very underrated," Thomas said.
Ordonez does have a good feel for why the White Sox are doing so
well.
"We've been playing together in the minor leagues and we come
to the big leagues together -- we're like brothers, we're like
family," Ordonez said. "Every time we cross the lines, we pick
each other up."
Ordonez now has 19 homers and batted .488 (20-for-41) with five
home runs and 17 RBI on the just-completed 13-game homestand.
Thomas batted .391 (18-for-46) with seven home runs and 12 RBI
during the stretch.
The White Sox went 8-5 on the homestand and have won 21 of their
last 27 games.
"Guys are getting better by the week," Thomas said. "We've
got that total team thing."
Baldwin, second in the AL in wins behind Toronto's David Wells,
snapped a two-game losing streak. He is one win shy of his 1999
total when he went 12-13.

Baldwin gave up two runs on five hits and three walks over 7 1/3
innings, striking out five. The right-hander waved his glove as he
left to a standing ovation from the crowd of 32,934.
Pete Schourek (2-7) dropped to 0-4 in his last nine starts,
giving up five runs on six hits and two walks over five innings.
"It was a bad time to have nothing," Schourek said.
Nomar Garciaparra, the AL's leading hitter, went 0-for-3 and is
batting .389 as the Red Sox lost for the seventh time in their last
eight games.
"I don't think it's going to take one game," Schourek said of
the Red Sox's efforts to get back on track. "We're going to have
to play perfect baseball for a series to get our confidence back.
This game is all about confidence."
"You've got to keep playing," Boston manager Jimy Williams
said. "You've got to keep playing. There's only one thing that'll
cure it -- it's a victory."
With one out in the Chicago first, Tony Graffanino doubled,
Thomas walked and both scored on Ordonez's 18th home run to make it
3-0.
With one out and the bases loaded in the third, Garciaparra hit
a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Thomas and Ordonez hit consecutive homers with two outs in the
third to make it 5-1, the 10th time this season the White Sox have
hit consecutive homers.
Herbert Perry hit an RBI single in the Chicago sixth off John
Wasdin. The White Sox loaded the bases in the seventh and Ordonez
and Paul Konerko each hit sacrifice flies.
Game notes
It was Ordonez's third multi-homer game and first since
last July 27 against the Yankees. He also drove in five runs last
Sept. 25 against Minnesota. Ordonez did not play Saturday to nurse
a sore right hamstring. ... Baldwin had shutout the Red Sox 6-0 on
a three-hitter May 9. ... The White Sox swept the Red Sox at
Chicago for the first time since Sept. 18-20, 1998. ... Boston
dropped below .500 (38-39) for the first time since April 11 (3-4).
